Hi everyone, what are the ugliest traditionals in your eyes? Is it a whole pattern or just a single knife? For me it would have to be the cotton sampler pattern, but I still love it.

Sorry. No such thing as an ugly traditional knife in my eyes.

To paraphrase Will Rogers, "I never met a traditional knife I didn't like."

I'm personally not a huge fan of those mixed acrylic ones that GEC in particular makes

I can't find a picture but it was clearly a one hand opener traditional by rough rider. Had some sort of triangular cut out for the thumb opening. Now in my opinion it was NOT a true traditional pattern only an attempt to cross market a knife.

Any of the case knives with multicolored acrylic or kyrinite, anything with fat slab stag ( if you can't keep the pattern in the stag without actually shaping to properly fit you shouldn't use it )
And anything with a stainless blade that's just all scratched and stoned up.
I'm also not a huge fan of a bright stainless blade with nicely aged and patina'd brass, though I can certainly live with it.

Hmmm, those gold glitter acrylic GECs certainly aren't to my taste, but they're still nice knives under the covers...

Never really been a fan of those French Kates, always makes me think of a pattern made to appeal to some trapper, goldminer or cowboy rolling into town to drunkenly blow his hard earned. Seeing that thing in the cold light of morning would certainly reinforce that feeling of regret!

Nothing wrong with the knife itself, but I can't stand the color. I think I'll see if I can't come up with a potion of black tea, beet juice and squid ink to darken it up a bit.

I think thats why the french kates have a bottle opener handle....so you can drown your sorrows. They definitely prompt me to ask were all traditions worthy of keeping.

Everyone's different and will have their own preferences and dislikes. What's ugly to one of us is beautiful to another. It's hard to pick a particular pattern that's ugly without hurting someone elses feelings. But, to answer the thread, a pattern that I can't like is the toothpick, they're funny looking to my sensibilities. As far as really disliking something, those knives from Pakistan with crude bone jigging and cruddy build quality, bleh. :barf:

This CASE Mini Copperlock , an otherwise great pattern, has some very high BARF FACTOR :barf: Stag in my view :D:D

Mind you, I don't mind using it but it is one eyesore....

Then as meako rightly points out, there's those French Kates....:D

Not everyone sees things in the same way, the 'beauty' of my old WW2 army clasp knives is, I imagine, lost on many people, whereas I found the Trestle Pines Grand Portage, which seemed popular, spectacularly unattractive.

I've got to agree with others here... that french Kate knife is something I could never understand. As I'm doing a lot of research and buying of traditional knives lately, it's obvious why there are so many of those still in stock with the retailers.

Maybe its just me, but I cannot understand Case's bone color choices. A major majority of them just look bad & unnatural. I prefer natural colors, and not something like my grandkids would come up with. Just me.
That being said, I do however appreciate the vast amount of variations available which makes the traditional market suit just about anyone.

French Kate, fish tail, The weird bird hook thing, acrylic handles, SAK's and that Trestle Pines above. :)
