hey all... I recently ordered and received an Izula full kit from Patriot Knives. Awesome fast shipping and super cool knife.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone else here has the ferro/magnesium rod combo from the full kit. Although it definitely won't affect the function, my ferro rod seems poorly machined. In particular, the top and bottom bevels of the magnesium portion are rough and uneven, and they don't look very professional at all.

Is this (purely cosmetic defect) normal? I know that with use, the mag portion will get chewed up anyway... just that I was a little disappointed to see it look so..blah.

the magnesium portion was meant to get scraped away... it will be shredded with use anyway. Unless you plan on building a collection of desk drawer designer fire rods, there's nothing wrong with yours. People spend wayyyyyyyy too much time and money fretting over fancy fire strikers when instead they should be focusing on tinder prep.

I'm gonna guess that it's normal, seeing as they assume they're gonna get chewed up anyway they probably dont bother making it look all nice.

Maybe it's not much to look at.... but I bet it starts a real good fire.

btw, i would suggest using that thing with one of the split rings, or a bit of cord for a loop.
I personally find firesteels that short hard to use without a handle of some type.

Yeah, you can get a little lanyard going on, wrap it around your pinky and ripcord the thing backwards with the knife stationary. I think that was on the directions with the various kits...but it is the best way to use all of them as far as I have experienced. Doesn't disturb tinder piles. Something I learned online! I just kept scraping the rods for years with the knife blades like a dumbass! :D

darn... and i was planning on putting the fire starter in a frame or something for display.

i guess it's ugliness means that i have no choice but to use it now... AH WELL :D

you could always use them as jewelry in body piercings!

and no, i don;t want to see where you hang one of them from!

That's for sure, I was goofing around the other night with it and struck some sparks at a frayed spot on my jeans, lit it right up.

So, you're not going to use it, huh? :D

Damn, I mean...just...damn.

haha. thank you for saying it for me. if it was me, i would've used...ahem...a different language that might've been construed as harsh to say the least.

Yes, by all means, go commit a legal and safe act of arson inside a fire-ring or something!
