Here ya go guy's...This is the handle that I have been lamenting about for a couple of week's...Since this was taken I have removed it and installed a Hickory handle that looks somewhat better...

Sheath was a practice "quick draw" for a small Khuk...Turned out ok I guess, just needs a bit of tinkering to get it right...Yea I was playing with the dye a little bit on this one..

Lemme know what ya think...

Great work bro. Is that a khuk blade? Lemme see it. I really like the sheath. Especially the color. Your tan color you used on my belt was good too. Glad to see you posting some of your work.

Looks mighty fine to this Alaska Greenhorn.

hehe...actually, with it sheathed it kinda looks like an old Herters skinning blade...

Wanna talk about abominations in leather...shoulda seen the monstrosity I sewed together the other night using string from a Halibut rod....:D

Thanks guy's:D

Andy,
I dont have a cam with me right now bro...I am pretty sure it is a mini-chit...Doesnt seem like a Bilton...Those 3 colors (2 in the pic+your belt) are the "syn" color that I offer (think of it as similar to snakes having a light and dark phase)...I can do it darker and lighter depends on what the leather tells me it wants...Since it is a true custom color it never comes out the same way twice ya know?? Makes for some interesting CCW sets...lol

RWS...If it will hold together then it's all good...I still have the first holster that I ever did...It will never see the light of day but i have it somewhere...err unless it burned it..hmm might wanna look at it

Hi Leatherface:

You did a nice job. That sheath looks functional and well as good looking. I think you gave it a lot of thought before going to work on it.

That sheath is a great job . Its got an old fashioned look to it .
Can I presume the snap is to open the side and make the Khukuri easier to slideout/draw? I too would like to see the blade and perhaps it half drawn with the snap unsnapped if I was right .

Thanks Steve...yea I wondered about a sheath for my AK and all that for awhile...I just dont like the wood covered ones as much as I do the straight leather sheaths (Although the one by Andy is starting to change my mind...kudos dude..soon I am gonna be buying stuff from ya!)

I am working on one for a Puukko right now...I dont like those either for some reason...

IIRC there was a guy that made sheaths for khuks (but stopped for some reason, bummer the guy is an artist) and his rig was the one used as my overall inspiration...So after looking at several different leather and kydex sheaths, decided I would try a design hybrid between the leather/kydex rigs, with a couple of changes to make it easier/cheaper to make...

What ya see is what I came up with...

A 15" AK tends to soak up alot of leather so I decided to do one for the Chit...Works pretty good but on the next one I will prolly make it a bit tighter on the small"ish" khuks...I am working on getting the Ak sheath done right now (err as soon as I get room to breath!) and I am pretty sure it will look pretty much the same, although alot bigger of course...OHHH with one exception...I wanna design a belt slot that is one piece but has 2 slots so the weight is distributed across more area...Think a pancake holster and ya will prolly get what I am saying...Gotta have a thick belt (BLATANT PLUG!!) or it will sag even with the extra area

Kevin...the "old style" was what I was looking for...If ya look close you can see where I waved the homemade antique stuff to try and swirl the color a bit...It worked pretty good in a couple of places but not overall...But it is my personal sheath so I am happy with the "seconds" from my bench..lol

Doubt I will try that again anytime soon..

<Can I presume the snap is to open the side and make the Khukuri easier to slideout/draw?>

Yuppers that is what it is designed for...The opening in the sheath starts where the angle starts on the Khuk...On a small khuk like this one it isnt really needed...but on a larger one it has to be there to give ya a faster draw...I have short stumpy arms so a straight draw on a large khuk isnt as smooth as one with a flap...yea I tried both:thumbup:

REPLY : I have long arms and high hips so might end up with a similar need as you . I,m not at the point where I,ll be making a snap open like that . I have a little piece of rawhide picked out for a simple sheath . I think I,m gonna try a horizontal draw as was suggested to me . I have to stick with my archery for nowand am in the process of building up aselfbow handle with leather to give it a better grip . The more we do the more we can do . I,d still like to see a pic with the Khuk half drawn forward out of the snap opening .

Kevin,
I will work on getting ya a pic...

A crossdraw?? hmm...

havent even thought of making one for a Khuk...Working on one right now for the JKM I got the other day...Working ok, but since I am using a foldover design it isnt as fast to slap together as a pancake and that = more money

Yea I am trying to get the cost down a bit...

If ya need some help with the design then lemme know...

Dave,

You'll have to let me know what you think when you get a large one done and use it some. I tried the quick draw and snap close solution with the FF if you remember. Your solution is way prettier, but still leaves this problem that I can't get over, and ruins the FF sheath for me. When resheathing the knife you've got to hold that piece of leather out of the way, putting your hand in a precarious position. I feel like one day I'm going to slice the snot out of the hand holding the snap out of the way. I've stopped using that sheath, and my designs since have been regular draw style with no extra closures. And now I've taken to just redesigning the original scabbard with a new frog. The next step for me is to carve one out of wood and shrink some leather onto it like a Finnish half-wood sheath. Lemme know what you think.

Andy,
Yea I see what you are saying...Only thing I can think of to get around this is to use the flat of the blade to "push" the flap out of the way and then push the knife in the sheath...Should work just fine

havent seen your speed sheath..Got a link??

I've got a picture at work. Its for my FF. I'll post again tomorrow. I think once you make one for a full size khuk, you'll start to see the beauty of a non flapped and snapped sheath.

Any leather worker, whose nic includes "leather" should not be making handles out of wood.

Time to conjure a leather design from your muse for the handle...sculpted, crafted, indented, expanded....something....stacked with camo leather alternates...something....

The sheaths are loverly.

Nasty..thanks...yea I am pleased with that one...Had to show something pretty now didnt I?? lol

Kismet...I agree totally...In fact I started a thread last week on that very subject...I have most of the leather squares ready to rock but I am in the process of designing a new snake cage for my babies and a cross draw rig that doesnt cost an arm and a leg AND a flashlight/leatherman sheath and all that has taken most of my time away from my handle project...As soon as I get some breathing room I am gonna begin working on a leather handle...err as soon as I figure out how to rivet the handle to the tang anyway:o

A really nice well fitted stacked leather washer handle takes some doing. I've tried a couple of times when I was a lot younger and failed miserably both times.
But then that was way before Al Gore invented the Internet and I didn't have access to all the years of experience these wonderful folks have.

Leatherface, as promised here is a picture of my my first Khuk sheath. Its for my FF and is split up the spine quick draw fashion. The strap is the problem. I just think holding it out of the way with my thumb is dangerous, and I don't want to go moving it with the tip and waving that sharp blade around near my abdomen. Cool thing about it is that it fits several of my khuks in the 18" range becaue of how wide the FF belly is. Anyway heres the pic.

Andy,
I see what you are saying...I "think" that the midflap would negate your worry about slicing your finger's...The way I figure it is this

When resheathing the blade you bring it up even with the flap...Using the flat part of the blade, you push the flap out of the way while pushing the blade into the sheath...err at least that is the theory as it stands right now...Anyone wanna volunteer a BAS with american Antler handles for a few months of testing???

Gotta get back to work on that AK sheath...

Good news... I did get the crossdraw sheath done for my JKM this afternoon...Still dont like the method of carry but it seems to work very well...

New thread with JKM pics please. And also this thread should be in the HI section so it doesn't get deleted. Theres an HI khuk sheath at the bottom there.
