Something just hit me. Someone wrote "Isn't that an ugly knife?" and then I found myself saying, "at least it isn't Plain....."
Sounded as good of an idea for a thread as any, so.....
So, I'd like to know, would you prefer Ugly or Plain, and why.
I'd rather have a knife with a little personality, myself.
.
Or look at it this way, would you rather have your knife look more like an anonymous Amish guy or Don King?

I like knives that have clean, straight, simplistic lines, and show great attention to small details that reveal their quality. To the untrained eye they might appear plain, but their beauty comes from their precision.

I'm a big fan of the Spyderco Military, so I'd have to go with ugly. It's the best folder I've ever used, but it sure is hideous looking, in that cool Spyderco sort of way.

I like versatile blades so, over the
concept of beauty, I often use blades
featuring a combo edge (try to cut a
rope underwater with a plain edge and
figure out :p ). Beside, I appriciate
the aesthetic of a plain edge on a small
blade because in this case the beauty of
it comes from the purity of the overall
geometric lines.

I'd take plain over ugly myself. I can appreciate simplistice designs without any embelishment. One of my favorite folders is the Sebenza, which is about as plain as they come really.

In the words of knifemaker A.T. Barr, "Don't you buy no ugly knife.". I have no problem with plain, ugly just doesn't sit right with me.

Plain. I like plain, clean designs and I've never been one for a lot of fancy decoration.

As they say, "Ugly is in the eye of the beholder."

I think all of MY knives look great.

Definently plain for me. I'm a plain-person, simple or symmetrical lines is what I like to see most. No fancy colors, I like the looks of anodized titanium, but that's as crazy as I'll get.

are ugly (Spyderco Ayoob), plain (Buck 110) and beautiful (Camillus abalone celluloid trapper with a nice patina). How they fit my hand and how they cut is more important to me than how they look to somebody else.

I use Spyderco, it's been said that Sal designs in the dark. It's true, they're FUGLY as all get go, but the ergos work 100%.

Even have a classy one, the Kiwi... so all spydies aren't ugly.

I much prefer plain over ugly. I'm a minimalist sort of guy that likes clean lines and form.

Some Spydercos are, to me, unattractive but I love my Meerkat.

Plain for sure. Keep things simple and there is less to break etc. Although the Tracker looks ugly I still like it. SERE 2000 plain but SOLID!!!

I'm hearing a lot about plain knives, but I see how popular "unconventional" knives are, a great example is Steve Ryan. When I mean ugly, sometimes, I mean, like Hummer ugly. Ugly But Bad Ass. Airkat knives are pretty cool looking too, even if it's just for the "way different" factor involved.

Whichever one cuts best and has a more comfortable handle. Personally I also find most of Spyderco's line to be attractive, although not in a traditional sense. One exception is the Lil' Temperance, but it's a mean cutter and one of the most comfortable knives I've ever used.

Simple, plain knives appeal more to me than dressed up, flashy knives. For example, one of my friends can't stand the way a Sebenza looks because it's too plain. I think that's the beauty of it; it looks good even though it doesn't have anything added onto it to make it that way.

Plain knives are boring and as ugly a knife is, it's never boring.

My Fallkniven S-1 is plain and boring. It cuts very well, I'll never brake it, it stays sharp...but it's boring!
