Hi Mark
Thought I would send an entry for the ugly knife contest.
16 inches overall.
9 3/8 inch blade of stock removal L-6 steel.
Blade is a full 2 inches deep.
Brass guard and ferule.
Elk Horn Base, the whole thing, with a brass pin through the tang.
Weighed out at over 2 lbs.
We'll call it the "Wapato Whopper"
Thanks TJ

This has been laying around for two or three years, its too ugly to show for sale.

6" X 2" X 3/16" D2 @ HRC 60 Flat + convex ground. Bocote scales w/ yellow bronze welding rod pins.

This blade was left in the acid overnite. It is O-1 and had filework on the spine. The filework is more like splitters.

I had a hard time selecting my ugliest knife. This one was selected partly because of the story behind it. This knife was ground from an old rusty file that I found near the rapelling towers at Camp Rogers in Dahlonega Georgia during the Mountain Phase of Ranger School. I can't really explain why, but I put it in my rucksack and kept it for the rest of the school. I had to hide the "contraband" during several layout inspections. It was pretty dumb, but somehow I knew I'd be able to tell a good story like this someday! Good story or not, it is a super ugly knife!

Well not sure if I uglied-up this knife enough, but you know something?? It's doggone hard to TRY to make an ugly knife! You got to forget everything you know! We'll here it is anyhow. D-2 blade, brass pins and mystery wood scales. The wood came of a big chunk os something else was given to me. Any clues? The blade was left in muriatic a while to get uglified.

My humble entry and here's the story:
The girlfriend was asking why the hacksaw blade I was changing had broke and since she had been kind enough to bring us some beers; I fired up the little oxy /mapp torch and showed her about some differences in heat treated metal. She was interested enough that we just went ahead and made this little “Primitive X-acto knife” from a piece of that saw blade.
Torch treated/beer quenched (couldn't help it, the glass was right there) hacksaw blade, convex grind, brass pin and antler tine. She uses it to open boxes and trim photos.

Regards,
Greg

I made this knife in 1966 when I was 10.

Old harrow blade , harness leather handle. 11-1/2" OA,4" handle, bent machine screws for rivets, apparently I didn't have any nuts for the machine screws.

My brother dug this out of the old barn several years ago and made a nice little plaque for it. It hangs in the shop.

Well here is my entry. I had to make a new one. Most of the ones I have made in the past are somewhere in the woods behind my house.
I call this one Snapper. It is made from a hand hammered lawnmower blade, and features a pattented Turf Trac handle. The grind started out as a convex, but ended up more like a convict's. Anyhow, there is a handy hole in the blade for hanging on the wall.
finally as always you have an option on the sheath, paper or plastic.

Paul, Dude; where's the beef????

Couldn't decide between these early attempts at twisted handle RR spike knives and this semi custom hunter. The spike knives speak for them selves.
The semi custom:.. One year just before opening day at a gethering of brotherinlaws I was showing off a custom hunter , D2 with filework wish someone had told me to aneal before I wasted several files brass guard and cocobolo handle. Seems one my brotherinlaw's had forgotten a knife so I offered mine. This left me without so as we finished some brew I mentioned I could make one to use with what was there. Mystery steel and a piece of broken broom handle. Heat treated with a torch and marquenched, also in beer. The custom pin as I sort of remember was a finish nail.
I got the only deer that opening day, a 135 lb doe and it did her nicely. Till now the knife has been sitting in the gun case.

And the winner is.................

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sweany

This was a hard decision. I dont think most of the participants really understood what an ugly knife really is. Most of them looked too good to be considered ugly.

All hail the new king of ugly. Be proud and forever happy to have won this lackluster thingy.

Everybody send some goodies to said winner !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You get to judge next year as a bonus
