This one I just had some fun with. It's my new beater knife. Aside from general testing and destructive testing, I like to carry one around for awhile and just have fun cutting up stuff and daily use testing. This one has an 8 1/4" chainsaw/1084 canister damascus blade (tried something different on this one, wasn't overly thrilled). The handle has a nickle-silver guard, a throat of grey-stabilized curly maple with red/black/N-S spacers and a handle of stabilized WaterBok bone. The lanyard (through the bone knuckle) is Reindeer skin thong with bone/grey curly maple "beads". You just pull the "beads" to have a usable length lanyard for cutting. Like I said, I just felt like posting this one because I had fun playing around with it. :D

J, when doing the chainsaw canisters, do you just draw it out and flatten only, or do you make an accoridon fold and open it up? I think the knife looks really neat!

Hell, I like it J. What do you cut your guard slots with? Nice beater!!

rhrocker- so far I've only drawn the billets out. Normally, I will stack the chain all in one direction and make sure I hammer it only from the sides that are the edges of the chain. This creates more lines as opposed to what I did here, which was the opposite and got rings and not as much contrast or "busy-ness". Hope that made sense.

blgoode-I just drill holes and open the slot up with chainsaw files, finishing up with smooth flat files of various sizes. One of these days I'll probably break down and get a mini mill for this but, I gotta get my press built and KMG from Rob first. :D

Hmmmm. Ugly is not the word to describe that knife Mr. Neilson. I can show you ugly in a knife :D . I for one like it. I can't say that it is the most beautiful damascus that I have ever seen but it is still nice. The handle and the guard alone make it a great piece. You should be more careful about calling something like that ugly. Calling that knife ugly makes some of us want to cry, since it is still more then five times as nice as anything that we can put out! ;)

That looks great, J.

I really like the attention to the details in the handle.

And a long, skinny blade is a nice touch.

Well, I'll have my KMG in a week or so so I'll let you know how I like it.......that may be a must have :D

I can never see the pictures that J. posts! Anyone else have this problem?

blgooode; I can personally attest that J must have commited serious crimes in a previous life. His guard slotting is obviously retribution for such.

J I'm kicking myself, I was a day late on picking up a Butterfly Die Filing machine. Basically a stationary reciprocating file that would make short work of those guards... Though on a plus note, I got a 7" chop saw, my 9" Southbend lathe, a gemstone faceting machine, and a 175lb steel plate that I I think would make a decent anvil for the time being.

Heh, heh. Matt came by for a couple days and hated slotting a guard my way. :p

I don't mind doing guards and other knife aspects the slow way sometimes. Speed is a nice thing but, I get real fussy about my fit/finish. Even if I get a mill, at least 1/2-1/3 of the guard will need to be hand filed for my knives. Things just aren't dead even when you do it all by hand.

Glad you landed those tools you wanted Matt.

J, that is one beauty of a beater! I really like the way the chainsaw blade is visually intact in the blade. Beatuiful overall as usual, and I really like the idea of the adjustible lanyard. Nice touch to a great overall piece.
Great job!

J.,

I agree with Mark, your ugly is nicer than my pretty!

I really like the shape of that blade. In the picture, I see the spine dropping almost like a claw (but less), yet there seems to be a recurve adding belly to it.
Then again it might be perfectly straight and it's just the angle I'm seeing it from :) Either way, very nice!

Whit: I've never had that problem, they always come through fine for me. Sorry.

Thanks guys, your being way too kind here.

Bill-your right. I was trying something different but, based on our standard Claw pattern. I've started making some bigger Claws lately (8-10" blades) but, was trying for a sleeker look on this one. I think I like the original look better.

J., that looks great! Not necisarily the best looking pattern (by itself)I've ever seen, but real interesting and the handle combination realy makes the whole thing just work somehow. Great Job.

J that is one seriously ugly knife! There's only one solution to salve your embarasment - you know the drill: send it to me! I'll dispose of it in my own, kind, way. :D

j,nice one i just keep coming back to look at it but i do that with all your knives. how did you make the canister damascus with out a press.

thanks for posting it david

I just use a smaller can and a little giant power hammer. I don't use a can any bigger than 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 4". I can't do any mosaics or anything just random stuff.

thanks j
i might try some i have a lot of chainsaw chain no power hammer but i'll give it a try with a 8 or 10 lbs hammer.

thanks david

There are some fellas that make can-damascus with just hand hammers, from what I understand. I haven't seen it done or tried it but, I would think is you used 1" x 1" tubing or kept the can short it would be fine.
