I found a spot of rust near the jimping of the Gayle Bradley that I kept in the box. It's not big but it's there.

I already rubbed it with a pre 82 penny, then polished it with mothers mag. That helped, but it's still there. Is there anything else I can do to get this rust off and prevent more from forming? I threw in a packet of desiccant in the box when I put it back in.

More work with Mothers and or some 400 grit wet Dry Silcone Carbide sand paper if you can get to it easy.

Thanks. I have tons of 3m wet/dry from 180 grit all the way to 2000. I'd rather go with something that is the least aggressive first. Is the 0000 steel wool less aggressive than the sand paper?

Also, since this knife is going to stay in the box is it a good idea to put the box in a ziploc bag filled with dry rice and seal it up to soak up the moisture?

Barkeepersfriend, it will remove the rust without any scrubbing.

I used bar keepers friend and then more mothers mag. The spot dwindled down to about the size of the tip of a ball point pen, but I can't get it to completely go away. I guess I'm going to have to go more aggressive with the abrasive. :(

I find Flitz works great. I even use it on my wife's flatware. Great on stainless appliances including my outside grill...no abrasives in it and wipes rust right off.

Is it pitted? Go carefully with the steel wool, and it seems to abrade the rust before the steel, so there is no change in finish. Perhaps the (plastic?) type steel wool would work best.

I look at it under 60x, and yes it's pitted. WTF. I got this one to be a backup to my other GB. But this one has rust on it so I out my other GB up and I'm going to use this one.

Since it is pitted, what do I do? BTW I just received this knife yesterday, so this had to have happened during shipment.

The BKF will work but you might need to let it sit for a few minutes. It will turn the rust spots gray if done correctly. Even pitted rust.

The only thing you can do is sand it down.

Personally I'd just leave it and keep it oiled, sanding out pits in high Rc M4 is not a job I would want on any day of the week.

Ok well I guess I'll just oil it and keep an eye on it. Will this spot cause trouble if I decide to force a patina later on?

Also, since you mentioned the RC rating, what is the actual rating of the GB?

Nope, it will patina like the rest of the knife.

I think the aim was 64 but I'd guess 62-64 is more likely the range that you will find in that knife. Its a production knife so heat treat tolerances are usually a little loose, some might make it to 64 and others to 62.

Do you know how it rusted, by the way?
There us some stuff I bought called Clean Power, it works very well on carbon steels, but it might be similar to whst Bar keepers friend does, in that it's a mild abrasive

I just got this one in the mail yesterday, so it had to have rusted when it was in the box waiting to be sold.

Get yourself some Fluid Film, apply it and forget about it. The FF will stop the rust in it's tracks and prevent any further corrosion. It is food safe, Mil Spec and NASA Spec.

As soon as I get back up to Tuscaloosa that is first on my list. A dealer less than 2 miles from my place stocks it.
