This is a rather silly question, is the transmission of a standard 2.5 ton army truck synchronized or do you have to double clutch?

Thanks

the one i drove here was double clutch.......(however with any synchro tranny you can still double clutch, some say that this reduces wear on the bevel teeth, as well as overall tranny wear (except your knees....)

When I drove them ('90 to '94) they were not double clutch. They did have an odd (to me) shifting pattern though.

I think that's right. It's been awhile.

Anything built in the eightys and newer should be but if your looking at older ones they probably aren't.Most any truck transmission works best to double clutch or don't use it at all, except to start and stop.:D

I drive one daily. Since I have no idea what "double clutching" is, I assume it's not necessary. ???

Ours are mostly '69 - '69 models. Don't know the rebuild dates.

You are correct.

someday I want one.
On the positive side, they are very durable, cheap, and have great clearance and off-road capabilities. On the negative side they are butt-ugly, uncomfortable, slow, unsafe, death traps. Not to mention that diesel is now $5 gallon...

Double clutching is when you let the clutch out between gear shifts while the shifter is in neutral to keep the innards spinning. Sychronized means there are additional gears in the transmission that let you go from gear to gear with only one clutch depress.

Reality I live in a dense urban area with no place to park it, drive it, and I probably can't afford the fuel.Someday though maybe when I retire and move to somewhere, I'll get one.

These guys to custom work on army truck. I want the Eleanor

Thanks for the explanation. No, you don't have to double-clutch a military surplus duece-and-a-half. Maybe you can if you want to?

Very cool, I like that.

Ours look like these:

That layout is called a dog-leg transmission. It is easier for slower speeds since you only need 1st gear to start up and then the rest is going from 2 to 3 or vice versa.

It is also an easier gear pattern to use when trying to rock your truck to extradite it from an enemy mud pit :D

Cool. Is that a radio truck?
I'm not sure what the Army uses those for. Communications?

We use them for mobile lab trucks for mudlogging in the gas field.

Dang that picture is big... I 'borrowed' it from the company website - didn't take it or upload it myself.

In addition to the Army truck I use, that's my blue F150 too. :)
