There are some excellent resources around the net, and I'm trying to compile a good list of links.

Check out my current list and let me know if there's anything you'd like to add.

For the lazy, my understanding of the current UK legal situation regarding ownership and carrying of knives follows, but remember that I am not a lawyer nor do I have any formal training in law and by reading the below you agree that I cannot be held responsible for any inaccuracies herein, etc, etc don't sue me.

The following is very probably incomplete

  • Knives illegal to own in the UK include:
    • flick/automatic knives
    • 'gravity' knives
    • balisong/butterfly knives
    • knives designed to evade metal detectors
  • Knives illegal to carry without 'good reason' in the UK include:
    • (all knives illegal to own)
    • fixed bladed knives of any length
    • locking folders
    • knives with blades over 3 inches

'good reason' means that the knife must be work-related or essential in some way. I read about a case where a paperboy was not considered as having good reason to carry a fixed blade to cut open the paper packages, even though it was essential. This is probably because a standard legal carry knife (i.e. 3 inch folder) would have sufficed.
Self defence is NOT a 'good reason'.

please add your corrections below!

I'm pretty sure that the first 3 in the illegal to own section ARE legal to own, as long as you do not buy, sell, trade or carry them outside the home.

In other words, if you owned them before the ban or found them in a coat you bought from a charity shop etc then it's fine to own.

I'm pretty sure that's right anyway
