UK Penknife? Hollow Ground?

Hey all, this is my first time over here in Spydie Land.

I am moving to England in a few months and I have been considering buying a Spyderco UK Penknife. (Not my first pick for a quality folder since it doesn't lock, but thats the law!) I have been carrying my SAK more often just to get used to carrying a UK legal knife, but its killing me not to be able to open my knife with just one hand.

Have any of you used this knife? How is it?

I noticed that its hollow ground. How would I sharpen that? All I have is a Norton dual-grit stone. It works fine for my Becker and SAKs, but none of those are hollow ground. If I used it with the UK Penknife, would I be able to easily change the profile? Or would I just screw it up?

The lightweight (FRN handles) UKPKs are hollow ground, but the G10 ones are flat ground. Sharpening a hollow ground knife is no different than a flat ground one.

I've owned a G10 UKPK and handled a lightweight one as part of a passaround. I prefer the G10 one, not just because of the superior materials (and flat ground blade), but largely because the spring is stiffer, giving it a more secure feeling when it clicks into place. The lightweight's action felt a bit light to me, making it feel less solid and secure.

And honestly, not having a lock isn't really much of an issue IMO. Most of my cutting work these days is done with slipjoints, and rarely do I feel like I need a locking blade. The UKPK is a great EDC knife even if you can carry a locking knife instead.

I have both versions of the UKPK FRN & G10 for UK edc, and find them superb for my everyday needs.

Given the choice of the two I'd go for the S30V, G10, and I prefer the drop point over the leaf blade.

Where are you seeing a G10 model?

I can't find it on the Spyderco website or on BladeHQ. I would rather have the flat ground blade, but I haven't seen that either. I think I like the leaf shaped blade better.

I got mine sometime back and I should have mentioned the G10 models have been disco'd, so it might take a bit of hunting around for one, but they come up for sale occasionally.

What your looking for is a C94GPFG3. I know of at least one place that has them in stock, but they are not cheap by any means compared to the regular UKPK's

The FRN UKPK are great for EDC as they are light and very affordable. The G10 version is a solid knife with great steel and FFG. I own both versions and quite often I carry the FRN version because it is light and I am not afraid of losing it but the G10 is still, in my opinion, better.

I had a few UKPK Leaf shape blade G10s a while back but ran out. I am not sure when I may get some more.

Do be very careful if you see a black G-10 UKPK for sale. There are a bunch of disturbingly accurate looking copies of the black G-10 leaf bladed version out there. They turn up on eBay quite often. The only thing that gives them away is that the real G-10 UKPK has provision for clip mounting on both sides, while the fakes only allow for RH clip mounting. There are photos here, in the Fakes & Knock Offs thread.

The UKPK Lightweight has a hollow grind in CTS-BD1(very sufficient for EDC) or you can get an older version in Gin-1. These are available in a few different blade shapes and PE, CE, or SE.

The G-10 UKPK has indeed been discontinued but you can often find them for good prices. These have a FFG blade available in two blade shapes or the hollow ground rescue version in s30v.

The UKPK has also come out in other handle materials like Carbon Fiber and Titanium which just make the knife look that much better.

Overall the UKPK is a really good knife and you don't technically need a lock for a knife to be nice, solid, and perform every day tasks.

If you want another Slipit the Spyderco Urban in Orange or Foliage G-10 with a Wharncliffe or Leaf blade is also an option. If you want a little cheaper than the Urban but a little more expensive than the UKPK and don't mind a pretty small knife, the Squeak is always an option.

Good luck in your hunt.
