Is Spyderco going to keep this in production for a while or should I get one now if I want one?

Is there any chance they'll introduce a more affordable but similar model? FRN scales for instance.

There are several new runs of UKPKs planned, including an FRN model. As far as I know, the FRN should be out early next year barring disaster.

I like the look of the UK Penknife but unfortunately it seems a bit expensive for a single bladed EDC knife. Hopefully Spyderco may introduce a more affordable alternative to the UK Penknife as part of their more economical Byrd range of knives in the near future.

I have the Spyderco Bug which I have found to be very well made and fantastic value for money. It may be a bit small but it is a solid stainless steel knife (similar in design to my much larger and more expensive Spyderco Police knife) and it is quite sharp.

Spyderco offers the Byrd Wings Slipit as part of their Byrd range of knives. This is a twin bladed folder with two sub 3 inch non-locking blades. It looks quite well made and it is legal for EDC in the UK and this will probably be my next EDC knife.

"a bit small"? The bug's the size of a zipper pull...

The UKPK is going to be around for awhile yet.

yup, "a bit small" is what you might call an "understatement"

...and there's a particular nationality which seems to take particular pride in making such remarks ;)

There has been no official word of the UKPK being discontinued. I hope it stays around for a long time. I have one and carry it everyday.

Sal gave confirmation, awhile back, that a more affordable UKPK would be released. It is called the United States Pen Knife (USPK). It will feature FRN scales and GIN-1 steel. I believe it will also have a wire clip but I'm not positive on that. Essentially, Sal wants to provide a more affordable option for those in restrictive locations. They can legally carry a well-made knife, with excellent ergonomics and not hurt their wallet too much.

I've never had a knife with GIN-1 steel but I know there are fellow afi's who have. From what I've gathered, it has good corrosion resistance and is from Japan. I think it's a notch under VG-10 but is superior to 8cr13mov.
