Wow, what a great knife! Perfect size, perfect ergonimics, flat grind S30V w/ G10, thumb serrations, I don't even care that it's not a lockback bc the slip mechanism is quite solid, the most solid I've ever encountered. It's a little difficult to open one-handed bc I'm used to a locking knife, but I'll get used to it. It isn't difficult to close, and you have no need to fear of it snapping down on your fingers. If you are looking for something like a Calyso Jr. but are in the minority like me that doesn't love it, this is the knife for you!

Question: why does the wire clip look like it was heat treated at a million degrees, all brown colored?

I totally concur!

this knife is sooo underestimated, with a slipjoint like that you don't need a lock :)

and don't worry JediKnight, your thumb will gain in strength and the opening will smoothen with time...

The UK Penknife is my EDC nowadays. The ergonomics are better than in any other knife I own, and I prefer the blade shape over that of the Calypso Jr. And the clip is great - the knife rides so low in the pocket it's almost invisible, and the wire clip makes it look like a fancy pen. That's one of the few things I don't like about the Calypso, the clip in the gray Caly Jr. is a bit too obvious as far as I'm concerned.

Because it is heat-treated to a bronze colour, to make it less visible.

The laws in the UK are redicoulous. I think it's nice how the UK pen knife is concealed and still follows the laws. I've heard of harassment that has taken place and it makes me want to stay away.

I have been carrying mine since January and like it a lot. I would like it even more if it had a lock ;-).

I keep hearing about this knife, and everything I've seen and heard makes it out to be a great little tool.

The question is, does anyone know when or if it might become conveniently available in the US? Anyone know of any US retailers (preferably with an internet presence) who are carrying it?

I've been searching like crazy and I've hardly been able to find it for sale anyway, and the only places I have come across are all in the UK. Those of us on this side of the pond want some UK Penknife loving, too!

aside from the second hand market, I don't think you can find a US retailer who's still carrying it, only NGK had some but was quickly sold out. the rest of the batch was sent to UK retailers. Heinnie Haynes is one of the best.

I'm not in the UK myself, so I ordered through Heinnie Haynes. Email sent on a Friday afternoon, confirmation that the knife had been dispatched on Friday evening. The knife arrived over here (I'm in Germany) on the following Tuesday.

Now, that's pretty good service, I reckon. The only question is why the Royal Mail took so long to get it over here. :)

delivery times vary a lot in the EU, sometimes it's 4 days sometimes it's 2 weeks...

While a front lock might be nice, I dont think there is a large enough market share. Basically, spyderco made the pen knife specifically for ppl in the UK who cannot use anything else. It would require a lot of re-design to make it a lockback. However, I do like the idea of more USA availability. A lock would be a nice idea, but I get the feeling that it would get lost with all of the other lockbacks.

Perhapse a compromise would be a G10 handeled and perhapse re-designed version of something out in FRN. For example, a calypso jr, or dragonfly. Although, Sal has already stated that the ZDP calypso jr will be frn to keep price down, so probably not a calypso jr.

Also, consider this. We all feel we "need" locks, but for years the only "lock" was a slipjoint and they were not considered dangerous. For most of our small penknife tasks, a lock is probably unnecessary, Especially considering the fact that the penknife is a very stiff slipjoint. Keep in mind this is a penknife, not a super tactical wannabe fixed blade. It is supposed to be an upgrade from something like a stockman or SAK, not a tactical folder.

The UK Penknife is a great knife, but it is a common misconception to say we cannot use anything but a sub 3" slipjoint knife.

I carry a Manix to and from work daily and use it in work all the time. The UK Penknife is 100% legal no questions asked, but as long as you have a reasonable "excuse" or reason for carry, pretty much any knife is allowed.

I have no problems carrying a Evo-1 on my belt while camping for example. Believe it or not our Laws are mostly quite sensible and most officers are really not interested in hassling Law abiding people. :)

Never been a prat while out and about, never been searched or had any problems with the police. Then again, I don't carry a knife down the pub...

I EDC the UK penknife too. It is a very fine knife excelling in everyway but for the lock.

Please make a lock version for the US.

I would buy a lock version for the U.S. tomorrow.
