I have mint used UKPK FG & brand new UKPK Orange.
I have mint used Urban in FG.

I've just noticed that the back springs in both UKPKs have a dark coloring on the inside/underbelly ... similar to a rusty patina?

The Urban back spring underbelly has a shiny polished finish.

Are these two different spring metals being used?

Anyone out there notice the same coloring on the UKPKs back spring?
I'm just curious as to whether my knives are rusted or not ...

I have a UKPK Slipit Carbon Fiber, that I just got brand new, and I know what you mean. I believe that it is just the coloration from the heat treatment of the back spring. Nothing to fret about. Enjoy the knives.

AAaahh ..that makes sense. I hadn't thought of it.
Thanks for the assurance that it isn't rust.
I DO enjoy these knives very much indeed. ;)

And just to add in another data point - my FG UKPK has the same thing going on so I wouldn't worry about it :)

My Urban FG and UKPK Orange had same thing out of box, enjoy them, great knives.

I believe that it is just the coloration from the heat treatment of the back spring.

Why would they heat treat the back spring? I am not a knife maker, but would not think the back spring would be heat treated. I imagine that only the blade is treated.

without the heat treatment metal just bends. If you bend untreated metal, it bends and stays in bend shape. Untreated metal lacks stiffness you need to make back spring work.

Might be the method used to cut the spring, rather than "heat treat". Laser cutting often leaves a coppery colored surface and, aside from the area that will ride against the blade, the interior probably does not get polished. Japanese maker doing the Urbans may use a different cutting method.
