Hey all. Frequent lurker, recent and infrequent poster, here. Contemplating the Spyderco Ulize. Can't figure out if it's a worker or a safe queen. Any opinions? Compared, say, to military? Thanks for your input.

Get it, us it, beat it up. It's designed for police work and, while it's not made to be a monster like the ZT 0200, it should stand up just fine.

Yeah, that raises another question I have. I wonder how many LEOs actually have and use Spydie police/ulize or if they're mostly purchased by colllectors? I've found several posts elsewhere that cops usually carry crappy $30 knives they don't mind losing. If they were going to spend some $$ on a blade, I would think they would be more inclined to purchase a sturdy, thick ZT 350 or something along those lines. Police/Ulize seems like a lotta blade to be carrying around. Since I'm not an LEO, I freely admit this is all idle speculation on my part. Anyone?

I think it would make a useful blade but not the best for a LEO mid locks just aren't that fast.....

completely depends on the officer. But I'd wager many more civilians carry and use these knives than officers. Most officers aren't gun or knife nuts, so they carry what is issued or what is found in your local sporting or hardware store. So you will find Gerber, or S&W, etc... If you do find the cop who is like us, then it is all personal preference... Could go Spyderco, Kershaw, BM, etc...

Why does it need to be fast? Last I checked officers have usually three or more options that are much better weapons than knives... Not to mention the millisecond of difference in opening a back lock versus something like an axis lock makes not one iota of difference for anything but playing with and admiring your knife.

My brother in law (who was leo for many years) didn't give a crap about knives. He probably carried a S&W to match his sidearm and thought he got a raging deal on it at Big 5. My other bil who is a Navy lifer calls Benchmade "benchmark" half the time, and my daughter, who is going into the Air Force (or is that Navy? Make up your mind!) couldn't care less about my knives.

We are the knife nuts, and we are the ones spending the majority of the money on em regardless of how they are marketed. At least that is what I have observed.

Its true most of my buddies carry crap knives. I have been fairly successful getting some of them to pick up a good knife. I am the only one in my department that is a true knife nut. You do see alot of smith & wesson knives lol(mainly because they seem to give them away with another purchase ie boots or duty gear. I will say before i started trying to convert them a few people did carry some beat up benchmades but most of them were former military with time in the infantry.

My standard response it this: do you want your wife's next husband to inherit a NIB Ulize, or a user that has your blood, biscuit gravy and drywall dust all over it? I say mark your territory while there is yet time.

The Ulize is a great knife. It has that long, recurve blade, but its thin enough to carry easily and disappear in the pocket. Thats a nice combo. It doesn't flick that easily, but its pretty stout for its thin profile.

I've been thinking of buying a Calypso, but the Ulize looks like a lot more fun.
Love that hollow ground saber grind.
