Ultimate fight as light user

So I just purchased my first khukuri. I picked up the ultimate fighter from the deals thread. I have been looking for my first Khuk and fell in love with this the second I saw the pic. So I'm wondering is this knife going to me ok for path clearing/ light chopping. Going by the size, weight and demensions I found on these knives I don't see why it couldn't stand up to this. When it is used I shouldn't have to use it for a long time so the weight shouldn't bother me.

Thanks for any help
Eric

Congrats on your new 'family member'. :) I find the real strength of the UF is, as the name suggests, fighting. It is very light up front relative to most other kuks because of the sharp swedge, which makes it very fast but also not a great chopper. Also, batoning is not adviced due to the swedge. Which might mean that another kuk like the WW 2 or chitlangi or sirupate should soon join its brother!

Yea I'm looking into a siru very soon. I was actually about to order the 18" siru when I saw this. I figured it would probably be best suited for fighting but seeing as how I'm probably not going to be doing any fighting wiith it I'm hoping to use it very light tasks untill I get a siru

leave it to this forum to consider chopping to be the expected task for a knife....

most knifey tasks dont involve chopping or a heavy front, the UF should serve you VERY well as a general use knife that can also transition into some heavier tasks

Pics? We need knife porn :)

Especially the Ultimate Fighter, I've been unsure about it cause not too many reviews of it hence I'm still undecided. Perhaps a good review complete with knife porn will do the trick?

By the way, has a forged finish UF ever been produced?

When it arrives I will get some good pics and put up a review. I spent some time looking for reviews to answer my question and couldn't find any so.. although I'm a newbie to khuks I will post a review for what its worth

Also I think a forged finish UF would look sweet!!

...

yup, pics are mandatory here

... and none of that soft porn either, we expects the blade to be fully out of the scabbard instead of having it's clothes on. :D

There are a few older reviews out there, just google:
"ultimate fighter site:bladeforums.com"
Or
"ultimate fighter review site:bladeforums.com"

I know but reviews by different folks have different take on things. Plus, knife porn fully undressed is always good :)

Yea maybe I didn't go Back far enough but all the reviews I found were just people talking about holding it and the weight and feel in the hand which is good info but i was looking for a review that talked about using it. Ill have tobdig alittle deeper tonight after work. I'm thinking about doing the cold blue/antiquing thing to the UF. But I'm not sure yet. Ill have to wait till I see it in person

It's my favorite khuk. It chops just fine, FYI. Plenty of heft to it still. Once I get my other one back from WildmanH's shop for a better sheath, I'll do a review myself. About the only thing it probably won't do well is baton, for obvious reasons, and it's hardly like batoning is a necessary skill. It's a great general user, while still being a fantastic fighter.

That's good to hear. What kind of sheath are you getting for yours? I'm currently debating between a kydex sheath which has better durability or a better leather one made in some dark distressed leather which would look completely awesome if I go through with antiquing it.

I think it's going to be a quick release leather sheath like the one that it came with, with D-rings sewn in to permit baldric carry, or lashing to a pack or webgear. I think an HI khuk deserves a leather sheath, unless you've done something like rehandle it with carbon fiber.

Yea I'm looking to carry it with two straps how you would a back back. And then carry my bag over top. And have some way to latch it to the bag if I feel like it. Is baldric just on the side or is it on back as well. The thread I found about it showed pics of both? I think your right it just wouldn't look right without leather

It's that 18-inch Chiruwa-handled Ultimate Fighter from 10/3, and if it's anything like mine, it'll be a tank -- built like a CAK, but having a different blade shape, and mine is thicker than a standard CAK. I'd consider mine worthy of "Field Use", regardless of the warranty. They are not "light" blades, and as with any low-tech heat treated blade, you should test it before full-bore chopping -- there are posts with better guidelines, but essentially start out with low impact swings, and inspect the blade frequently as you chop progressively harder. Bang it side-to-side against a tree a couple times too; you're trying to determine that the blade won't fail catastrophically under a hard impact; take a moment to read the safety guidelines sticky because a failure of material or careless chopping with a khukri can result in wounds comparable to those from an axe.
