I just recieved an brand new Ultimate Hunter in the mail today. I was looking into this knife for a long time because it seemed like a solid folder for a fair price. I am mostly a fixed blade guy because I live out in the back country in Colorado where knives are carried by many people and often come in handy. I decided to go for this one because it was not expensive and I have heard good things about it from others so here we go:

I took it out of the box and the knife struck me as thick. The handle is very think as is the blade. When I saw that the knife was 4mm thick online, I wasn't quite sure of how I myself would perceive this. When I actually saw it, however, it was a beast. 4mm is very think for a folder of this size. This is a very thick knife, both blade and handle.

As for the blade, the satin finish is one of the best Ive seen on production knives. Better than the finish on the Voyager and Vaquero series. The VG-1 looks beautiful with a finish such as this.

The knife is razor sharp, I popped several hairs, effortlessly, off of my arm shortly after I opened it.

The thumb stud is not invasive as all, I actually like it on this knife.

As for the grip, the thermorun handle is much more comfortable in the hand than the Zytel or Krayton. It is easy to hold and, at first impression, it seems as if it could be used for hours without becoming uncomfortable or slipping out of the hand. The shape of the grip is also comfortable and is a very good fit for my hand. The pocket clip is a small one and does not get in the way at all when the knife is used.

The knife is a tad bit stiff when being opened and does not open as easily and the Vaquero's do. I am not worried about this because I am sure that it will loosen up with time and it will not become a problem.

The lock seems extremely strong because of this knife's build and the blade is not loose in the slightest.

On the blade, "Ultimate Hunter VG-1 Stainless" is written. This is the only part of the knife that I deem unattractive. This not a major problem because this is a user and the problem is purely of a cosmetic nature.

So far, my only complaints are the blade being a little stiff when being opened and the writing on the blade. Other than that, this thing is built like a tank and is scary sharp. It will definitely going with me on my next hunting trip.

I hope you don't mind me adding my thoughts to your great post. I feel that the Ultimate Hunter is one of the best values Cold Steel sells. I've had one for quite a while and gave another as a gift. Both were flawless. The locks are very very strong as is the whole knife. Its a knife you can trust and certainly up there in strength with the Manix and any other heavy duty locking folder on the market today. The steel liners in that knife inlayed into the Thermorun handles are thick and strong. For the price of this knife it is a steal for what you get. I don't know what they run today but I had like $50 and some change in each of mine when I got them.

The only draw back to this knife is as you mentioned, that it is quite thick. It also sticks a bit to the pocket due to the tackyness of the handle material but its not too bad. Certainly not as abrasive and damaging to the pocket as some other materials like those Buck Strider folders are.

The lock on mine seats deep and has a very nice clank like a steel vault shutting down.

Regardless of what one thinks of Cold Steel or the owner he has a winner in this knife and his attention to detail on lock strength certainly shows on this model.

I've got plans to one day take mine apart and remake the handle in a thinner more Manix like profile to make it slightly better in the pocket. I'd carry it more if it were not so thick. I really like the blade and its quite strong being that thick too and although thick it slices surprisingly well.

By the way. Mine smoothed out over time. Once they break in they get nice. I had to tweak the pocket clip on mine and ended up breaking the factory one and remaking a new one. It grabbed a bit much for my tastes.

Well, I broke down and ordered one. Curiosity got the better of me. It should be here tomorrow.

So once you have it for a while, will you tell us how it holds an edge etc.?

Hope so.

I have had one for a few months now and have nothing but good things to say about it. Solid lock, razor sharp, easily cleaned, and fairly cheap to boot.

They only thing I would change is the pocket clip. On mine it is very tight and sometimes hard to get into the pocket or IWB. Other than that the knife is great and I highly reccomend it.

UPS just dropped it off. The only thing I immediately see wrong with it is a bit of discoloration on the blade. Looks like a spot. It shouldn't effect performance, but I would prefer it not be there on a new knife. Other than that fit and finish look good.

It locks up like a vault. No play at all, and gives a solid "thwack" sound when the lock engages. It is a little stiff upon opening, but I suspect that will get better with use.

Mine looks a little different than the pics I have seen. There is jimping on the choil area and another section on top of the blade about an inch from the tip. Reminiscent of what Blade-tech does.

My first impression is quite positive, I'll know more when I've had a chance to use it.

Keep us posted shootist. I'm looking into getting one too :D

The spot on the blade came off when I wiped it down with tuff cloth. So cosmetically she is fine now. I would prefer they didn't write "Ultimate Hunter" on the blade, but I will admit that many companies seem to like putting writing on the blade.

The handles are comfortable. The Thermorun grip has a little more give than frn used on many knives in this range. The handle swells to 3/4" at the thickest part. I believe the grip would be comfortable for long term use. Some people have stated that the knife is too thick for edc. I think that is subjective. It certainly isn't going to be as thin as a Spyderco Military, but I think edc is possible. It depends on the person. I wear my pants a little loose, so I don't think it will be that big a deal. The Thermorun grip does have a quasi rubbery feel to it. Time will tell if it is prone to wear from being pulled repeatedly out of a pocket. I haven't heard anyone complain of this, I'm just wondering out loud.

I'll have to get some pics. I think the jimping is a nice touch. They must have recently addded them as I can't find a pic online that shows it.

So far, I have to say that it has made a positive first impression on me. I like it better than the Voyager series by the same maker. I don't see why it can't be a competitor in this class.

The jimping is a new addition. My old AUS-8 model had absolutely no jimping anywhere. If you haven't tried disassembling it, I'll tell you that the steel liners underneath the thermorun are as beefy as the rest of the knife (I never measured, but I'd guess 1.5 or 2mm thick).

I ended up selling the knife because I found it to be too thick to EDC though. Good blade, but I would have personally preferred thinner handles. If it were up to me, the knife would have thin G10 scales with nested steel liners. Like you said, this is a personal preference.

How does this compare with the #4070 KaBar Dozier Large Folding Hunter?
Similar dimensions, AUS 8 steel, ..... has anyone compared the two together? Kabar goes for around $25 online.....

I have the large Dozier. Review is here:http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=483426&highlight=dozier

Still have not had time to really evaluate the steel performance.

But I don't have the ultimate hunter to compare. Sure would be interested to compare VG1 to AUS8 real life performance. sigh. As one of the guys says in his tagline, "so many blades, so little time." or so little money.

Thanks knarfeng. that is one hell of a good review! Just curious if anyone has used both to compare. Might be a bit big for my hands, based on what I'm reading.

I used an Endura 4 for comparison

Here are a couple more pics. I apologize for the bad quality (slightly out of focus), but I think it gives you an idea of the relative size. You can also see the jimping that is apparently on newer models.

After having this one for a little while I thought I would add some likes and dislikes.

I like the feel of the handle, beefy and comfortable. I like the blade. The bladeshape is very useful for a variety of tasks. The knife locks up like a vault. Overall the knife inspires confidence.

I don't like the themorun handles. They are very comfortable, but they drag (or grab) in the pocket during withdrawal. I also don't like the thumbstuds. My thumb became very sore after many openings. I would like this knife much better if they would replace the handle material and thumbstuds.

The jimping on the blade serves a couple of purposes. I would assume the jimping on the ricasso area is for a non slip grip and a place to put ones finger for better control on precision cuts. On the top of the blade I belive in days gone by that was a match striker area for fire proof matches. A nice classic touch. I would buy one in a heartbeat but the thermorun handles are holding be back. If they were even zytel I would be on it like white on rice. keepem sharp
