saw this post in another knife forum. the only iffier situation was the one where spiderman had to choose between saving the girl or the children. what everyday-carry knife would have used:
Several years ago, I was the night supervisor and was notified by our dispatcher that there was a man standing on the railing of a bridge, he had a rope around his neck that was tied around the rail, and was threatening to jump.
After alerting our Marine Patrol and our Crisis Negotiation Team, I headed that way, but it was a long way off and since the traffic on the bridge was stopped, I was not getting there with any speed.
I phoned one of my Sergeants who was on the scene. He told me that there were two officers trying to talk to the guy, but were not making much headway. Their plan was if he jumped, one of the officers was going to try to cut the rope before the schmuck reached the end of it. The officer had his knife open, placed in his belt behind his back.
WOW, what a test of a knife, not to mention a test of technique. The rope would have to be cut with one slash within about two-seconds, from about fifteen feet, before it broke the guys neck.
So the question is: If you were in this situation, what kind of knife would you want to have and how would you carry it. Remember, you are in a police uniform and your car is a mile down the road behind the traffic -- so no bushwhackers.
At the time, I was carrying a Mel Pardue auto that would not have been up to the task. It was quickly replaced.
BTW, the guy was talked down and we charged him with a bunch of misdemeanors. Judges seem to handle these people a lot better than pshrinks. Rope was about 3/4" nylon.

my own answer was kinda laughable (but i would have received a medal).
