Does any one know the avg carbide of 01,13c26,shirogami 1? I'm out to find the ultimate wood carving knife steel, and I have determined that it has to be hard fine grained and fine carbides. Does any one know what steel has the best avg carbide(smaller better) and finest grain?

What's the best wood carving knife steel and why. Remember your push cutting so mirror polished fine edge is needed not toothy micro serrations like d2.

It is just that your post made me think of a thread on a carving forum. http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/f52/help-absolute-best-pocket-knife-28613/index2.html

If you read that thread you will see that a lot of really great carvers use all kinds of knife steels. I would suggest you use what ever knife is comfortable in your hand. And how you sharpen the knife is, IMO, more important than steel.

I asked about how much you carve because I thought that you might need this for a special type of carving.
