Hi,

I was wondering who is selling these stones. I know Linda has them on her list but i cannot reach her. Does she accept anything other than Money Order? The main spyderco sales dept. wants $15 for shipping, it cost more than the stones. I am just wondering what other options i have.

Linda's been a bit busy lately and is working through a backlog of e-mails.
She does take Paypal as well.

I am also looking for a set of these "Mythical" stones for my Sharpmaker. If there is a source let me know. :D

Hi Musky Hunter and Greymoor. The "mythical" ultra fine" ceramic stones are available at SFO (800-828-1925). They are $12.95 each. If purchased in the USA, shipping is free via UPS ground service.

The cost of $15 is to ship to Canada. More if you are overseas. This is the cost of getting it to Canada.

You may ask your local dealer to order them for you with his regular Spyderco order, this would save you direct shipping costs.

You could have them shipped to someone that you know in the States and then have them shipped to you, but I'm sure costs would be similar.

Sorry for your dilema.

Hi Sal,

Thank you for replying. I will get it off the Spyderco Website if i cannot get hold of Linda within the next 2 days.

Hi Sal,

Just ordered a set of the ultra fine stones for my Sharpmaker. Could you tell me the grit ratings for the 4 different stone that I have?

Diamond
Medium
Fine
Ultra Fine

Thanks!

Hi Greymoor. The diamonds are 400 mesh. The ceramic are medium, fine & ultra fine. We never been able to find a way to effectively grit the ceramic stones. The different grits are made through firing processes and surface processes.

I just bought mine from SFO. I almost bought only 1, but fortunatly it says sold individually on the bottom. It cost alot to ship to Canada. $40+ for 2 stones and shipping, i hope it is worth it.

$40 is a lot of money for a couple of stones. On the other hand, cost of manufacture controls the price. As to their value? They will make you "sharper" for the rest of your life. Is it worth it to you is all that counts?

When I want to impress, a piece of VG-10 sharpened at 30 degrees and finished with the ultra fine does a fine job. At the last Guild show, I had such a blade (Temperance FB). The custom makers were impressed with the degree of sharpness.

How far back to peel the onion?

How good do you want to be?

Passion is the spice in the spirit that makes excellence possible. Passion drives quality. Achieving such a dgree of sharpness is a combination of materials, process, steel and effort. Just the act of doing it and achieveing the goal could be to many worth the $40.

LOL, i truly hope you are right Sal. I love the sharpmaker so far. Alot better system than Lansky or Gatco. I just hate the fact that i must buy the Diamond stones for fast reprofiling. I recenly bought some diamond coated stones and rested then on the same angle as the sharpmaker for reprofiling. Works like a sharm. But i accidently cut myself 2 times holding the damn stones. Also the flat diamond stones will not work with recurve blades like BM 710. I might as well buy the diamond coated triangle sticks latter. Sal how strong are teh diamond coat on the 204D? I bought a gatco diamond coated triangle dog bone sharpener fro serations before and it wore out after 7 or 8 sharpenings. Waste of $30 CND. I am so pissed off at gatco.

The trick with the diamond triangles is not to push hard on them. Just let them glide along the triangles and you'll be ok. Since the diamonds are only a coating on the steel triangles, if you push too hard against them, the diamonds will flake off. Just push lightly, almost letting gravity pull the blade down. Sure, this will mean that you'll need to run them a few more times down the triangle rods, but it will still work, and it won't cause the diamonds to flake off.

You don't need to worry about this with the other ceramic rods.

Hi musky hunter,

I ordered them from SFO as Sal suggested. I was getting nowhere trying to find them on the Web. I bought my Diamond Sleeves at New Graham. Earlier I gotten such a great deal on my Sharpmaker from another site (which they no longer list) that it paid for half of my Diamond hones so it was not such a large investment :)

Take care and stay sharp!

In the Toronto area, Spyderco ceramic triangles, the fine and medium ones, are sold by Lebaron, as listed in their catalogue (http://www.lebaron.ca). No ultrafine triangles or diamond triangles, though.

Also in Toronto, Europe Bound, on King St. W., across from the MEC, has a varying selection of Spyderco products, including various Spyderco sharpening stones. As to what they have at the moment, I don't know.

Hi,

Le Baron is my second home. I spend alot of $$$$ (4 figures a year) there. They never have any knives in stock. I dont want to wait. So i just bought it from the SFO. I usually buy my knives from www.knifeworks.com ! They have the best prices and ship really really fast.

Hehe, you bet. My left hand is bare. LOL. The stones gives the blades a really shinny finish. Just 5 strokes on each side gives it a polished finih. You can slice a piece of paper hanging in the air. It makes my Delica back to factory sharpness. It doesnt have the factory microserrations but it is very sharp compared to the fine stone.

Dear UPS,

Please bring me my 204UF's today. I promise I'll be good and not put a razor's edge on the potato peeler like when I first got the Sharpmaker.

Musky,

Those are some fine quality results for the effort involved.
