Ultra Fine Pocket Stone?

I have a double stuff and I enjoy it greatly. Recently I got the medium and fine pocket stones separate so I could use both sides of the stones when needed. I absolutely love this set up, but I find myself wanting to complete the trifecta of medium-fine-UF.

Spyderco, any chance in having a UF pocket stone in the future?

Hi CrimsonTideShooter,

Probably not. The smaller stones are made for industry and Dental applications. They've never asked for an ultra fine. You might put a fine stone in a tumbler for a few days. You can also carry an ultra fine triangle, maybe cut it down with a diamond saw.

Ahh would tumbling the fine stone polish the surface to make it act like a finer grit? I actually have access to a tumbler. What type of media should I use, and for how long?

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I am VERY interested in doing this. Even if it didn't go all the way to UF, it would still fit my uses. :)

Lee Valley sells a couple of pocket-sized ceramic stones which closely resemble Spyderco stones that have been cut in half. The Medium stone is around 800 grit and the Fine stone is around 8000 grit. Perhaps the finer one would fit the bill for you in the meantime?

Hi Shooter,

Standard hard ceramic media. I'd start with one day.

That's how we make our ultra fine triangles. We tumble the fine grit.

You can also lap the fine hone on a diamond plate. Takes a while but will result in a flatter, finer hone.

I've done that as well and it works fine, but the ceramic stone really screws up the diamond stone in the end. Any grit grit will work, but expect to sacrifice the diamond hone.
