Ultra Fine Sharpmaker rods

I have a Sharpmaker with the standard medium and fine rods. Usually, I get a nice shaving sharp edge with regular sharpening methods. I wondered about the ultra fine rods for the sharpmaker. Is there any point in getting them when I can get a satisfactory edge with a regular routine? Would they be helpful to get them to produce that 'spooky sharp' (the step after scary sharp :) )edge? What is the main reason for the ultra fine rods? To polish? To work with small blades? Any responses are appreciated.

I have the ultra fine rod (singular, I didn't realize it didn't come in pairs) and I actually don't use it much. It produces an edge closer to "polished", which is great for lifting hairs off the arm, but I usually stick with the fine rod, which has more bite and utility for my purposes.

If you were to hold a fine and an extra fine ceramic rod in your hand, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. However, they do make a very noticable difference after use, they certainly take it to the next level of sharpness.

But as Planterz says, it depends what type of edge you are after.

I agree with my for-speakers...for-posters.

On the other hand a pair of UF rods are only about $16.

In the last few months, I have been wanting that polished edge that Planterz spoke of and a way to maintain that better that average sharpness. Looks like I'll be hunting down some UF rods. Thanks for the info, everybody.

I use mine for my kitchen cutlery and I see a definite difference. It just depends on how you use your knives.

I just bought a pair, and have been experimenting with my kitchen knives and a couple of my pocketknives. I have to say, I should have done this a long time ago. There is a definate difference in the edge.
