Just bought one, Wow! That was very expensive for a stone! By Spyderco, so bound to be worth it!

Couple of questions if thats ok.

Is it a 2000 grit stone?

How better an edge will it give over the 1200 grit white stones?

Anyone used one and have any comments?

Anyone got any user tips, I have always used crock sticks or an angle Sharpmaker in the past. I have some DMT products, and the Spyderco Jewlers set, 600 and 1200 grit Spyderco Pro files as well. Point being I am not current on the use of a benchstone.

Sal, ever considered a 'guide' for the larger benchstones, so we can get the angle just right like the Global one?

How does the Ultra fine compare to a 8000 grit water stone for polished edges?

Cheers!

Well, lets see here.. The Medium grit is around 800-1200 when its broken in, and Ive heard the ultrafine stone compared to about 4-6000 grit...

Hi General. there is no way I can tell for sure exactly what the grit is. only a comparison with ohter stones can give you an idea, but we find that the feel and finish might be different.

The normal white (fine grit) Spyderco bench stone is reground with a diamond surface grinder to create the ultra fine grit.

I can tell you that is is very fine (miror polish possible).

It is perfectly flat.

It will never wear out.

It doesn't need oil or water to use.

I sharpen straight razors on it.

It is so expensive to produce that we keep it in the line simply because of what it is. If we charged what it should really cost, none of us could afford one.

Cheers!

As a ballpark figure Sal, what are we talking about here?

100-200 bucks? Or $500plus?

Thanks! It looks like a fantastic product, hell its made by spyderco what else did I expect!!!!

I was sold it on the advice that a chap makes steel survival mirrors and uses this to give the reflective polish! If that does not do the job, what will!

Any tips on use?

Cheers!

Anybody know where I can pick one of these up? I looked on our very own 1SKS, but all they seemed to have was a Sharpmaker, and I've already got a Profile set that fulfills my basic needs.

Wayne,
Are you asking for tip? OK, here it is:
  • use your Sharpmaker when you want to get your knife perfectly sharp,
  • use your Ultra Fine Bench Stone when you want to enjoy sharpening process as itself

It is really great pleasure for me to sharpen free hand and to finish the edge on SPYDERCO Ultra Fine Bench Stone

Wow! Thanks Sal. I guess I got the bargain of the year! Well, any Spydie is a bargain to me!

As a friend once told me, he likes Benchmade because they "are weapons that can be used as tools"

I like Spyderco, because they are great TOOLS that can be used as weapons!

Sergiusz, cheers! You know my first name! Wow! You got mail.
