Playing around with some ultra thin .060 S35VN. It should make for ultimate slicers that will cut like lasers :D:eek:

Will most probably do some Wharnie and Hawkbill neckers as well.

You must have a good opinion of this steel. I have a couple of Bark Rivers, but they're thicker, .190".

It is basically S30v with some Niobium. Properly HT'd S30v is very good stuff when a knife is designed and used around its parameters.

Hey Ban, don't drill any holes in the tang of the one we discussed, I have an idea for some menuki under the cord wrap...

That kitchen knife with s35v is on my want list. Hopefully with g-10 handles :foot:

Gomle,
I will see what I can do for you ;)

Does anyone think that the handle is too short? I wanted to maximize the blade length because I figured that most people that use a kitchen knife will choke up and use a pinch grip anyway.

Is this the same bladeshape like the ti santoku you made recently? Handle looks big enough.

It is slightly smaller overall but the blade is only about 1/2" shorter.

Looks fine to me too, but yeah, would have to hold it. That will slice for sure

That thing is crazy, ground thin too! Great size for a kitchen knife as well. It was one thing to see a pic and spec, but another thing entirely to actually hold that thing in my hand and see/feel just how thin it is. Can't wait to see this one finished up.

Yep it is full flat ground and then convexed. It will be the ultimate slicer from hell :D Can't wait to finish it to try it out.

Got to check these out yesterday...and I'm REALLY excited to see the finished product. These ultra thin knives are really cool.

Ban, I found your next marketing campaign, "THIN is SEXY".

Finally got done with this ultra thin Santoku. I think I may have just made the world's slimmest knife. The thickest part on the full convex is .038 :eek: It is also one of those knives that gave me the most drama that I have ever experienced! :grumpy:

Had a hard time grinding this thing when it was still annealed because it kept on warping back and forth. Seemed to have Heat Treated OK with no warping. Didn't realize that there was a dip right smack in the center of the blade until I started finish grinding it. It was sorta like a low concave spot on one side and a high bump on the opposite. This forced me to regrind the whole blade to remove the low and high spots. Spent a good 2+ hours doing that because it is so thin with so little margin for error.

Started to clean up the finish progressive after removing the high/low spots and started to put the final edge geometry onto the blade. As I was cleaning up the finish with an old fine scotchbrite belt the spine caught onto the half torn splice of the belt. This propelled the knife forward right into the aluminum platen holder. Luckily not body parts were in front of the knife when this happened. As can be seen from the pics the knife took a deep bite into the aluminum and suffered a decent rolled edge. I was surprised to find that the edge did not chip out. It probably has to do with the toughness of both the convex edge and S35vn. Will try to take better pics tonight and possibly do a video of this knife slicing through stuff.

Wow, .038... good to see it holding up so well to the aluminum platen and lucky you didn't get hurt!
