Ultrasonic baths for knife cleaning??

I have a stonewashed blade and some how I got a stain on the blade. A dark area that looked like it might have been a liquid. There was no thickness to it that I could feel. So I tried 99% alcohol, acetone, wd-40 and lighter fluid on it. Only the acetone seemed to remove part but not all of it. And I rubbed and rubbed with it.

So I put it in a warm ultrasonic bath with hot water and simple green. I ran it for 10 minutes.

It was totally clean when done. The blade might be a bit lighter than before but I am not sure about that.

It got me thinking... why not put all metal parts in the ultrasonic bath (as long as they are not touching).

Any problems or concerns about this??

Some folks do this. They seem to get good results. It's just expensive. You can get a cheap ultrasonic cleaner but they really don't have good features you want for deep cleaning, the good ones cost upward of $200+

In any case if a more affordable one does good enough for you then use it. Most knives are not as delicate and intricate as other things like jewelry etc. A decent one for 40-100 should work okay.

Do a search on ultra sonic cleaners features to see the different aspects and what they do. Example http://www.tovatech.com/blog/11021/ultrasonic-cleaner/how-to-pick-an-ultrasonic-cleaner

Have you tried brake cleaner or choke cleaner? Sometimes these are better than acetone... Depending on what your trying to remove. I'm pretty sure you want to read the label as you may not want to handle without safety measures. But it may save you time and money if it works better.
