Im picking up an Ultrasonic cleaner. I want to used it to clean some of my dirtier slipjoint knives. What kind of fluid do I use in this thing?

Thanks

Dave

Don't have one, but I think some or most of them come with instructions recommending something akin to dish detergent + water. Some brands carry & sell their own 'cleaning fluid', which I believe is essentially the same thing. Most or all of them strongly caution against anything flammable (solvents, either petroleum-based or alcohols), especially if they are heated.

I use a Fireline ultrasonic cleaner for fire restoration contents cleaning and other speciality cleaning needs. For proper cleaning a correct surfractant and knowing the ph of the cleaning liquid is absolutely necessary. If the ph is off even 1 point from the recommended ph you can loose as much as 10x the cleaning power as it should have.

Done properly ultrasonic cleaning can do wonders, done wrong and its just frustrating.

Make sure that immersed objects are suspended above the bottom of the tank. The sound horns/generators are usually attached to the bottom. Objects o the bottom will interfere with the proper sound wave generation.

I have a non heating one. I just use hot water and some hand dish washing liquid. Sometimes I have used plain water. Works great on jewelery.

I once put a pair of kitchen shears in it. I literally watched a black stream of gunk come out of the pivot.

If "ultrasonic" and "ultrasound" cleaners are equivalent(?), Eisman has experimented with different solutions and posted some of the results here.
