I need some help.I am considering ordering a Umfaam but am concerned as to why the original design is being redesigned. I realize that the new design won't be available for a year. Is it ok to get the old design or should I order a Mnandi ? I am looking for a EDC pocket knife.

Can't go wrong with either one. I own Mnundi and Umfaan, they are both great knives. I would get Umfaan. It might increase in value since it's being discontinued.

I have both. I think that the mnandi is more versitle and elegant. I have one on order in blue mammoth ivory.

I would suggest you try before you buy. The Umfaan may be too small for your hand. I read that the redesign is supposed to be to make it easier to open.

Having said that, I've got an Umfaan and a Mnandi myself. I carry the Mnandi clipped inside a small cargo pocket or a flapped shirt pocket. It goes anywhere and is just big enough to do a lot of real cutting.

The Umfaan is my baby. Of all my CRK knives, it is a personal favorite. But it does take a different kind of carry, being small and clipless. I keep it in the small outer pocket of my Mission Wallet.

I bet if you carried both for a while, you would find yourself using the Mnandi more.

I have both also and I carry the mnandi daily. The Umfaan is just laying around, hopefully gathering value. As a "user" the mnandi has it all over the umfaan, blade length, ease of opening, S30V, aesthetics....there IS a reason why they discontinued the mnandi;) . If you want a collector's item, track down an umfaan, there are a few still floating around, looking for homes. But if you want to use it, the mnandi would be my choice, and IMHO, is probably the best CRK value knife.:)

At Blade '02 I handled both.....found the Umfaan a tad bit small and bought the Mnandi. Would've bought both if they fit but not sorry with the large and small Sebenzas and the Mnandi I took home!

I own both and I must admit the Mnandi is the more beautiful knife but I love the Umfaan for everyday carry.I didn't realise that a new Umfaan was being made.I thought the Mnandi had replaced it!

I must admit to having never handled an umfaan, but own a Mnandi. It is slim, extremely light, elegant looking, and nasty sharp. Additionally, it has a "traditional" pocket knife look that is sheeple friendly. I may only be corroborating what has been said on the prior threads.

If you need "working EDC" than get small sebenza of course. If you're looking for more gents design than Mnandi all the way... some pics:
