I need some recommendations. I have had my Umfaan (love it by the way) for a couple of months now. I cannot, for the life of me, come up with the perfect carry mode.

I have tried the included slip sheath - seems to big.

I have tried a William Henry Clip Case - too hard to access.

I have NOT tried carrying it without a sheath/case (it's a CGG).

What to do?

Thanks for any suggestions.

It's a tiny little thing and I agree it's a bit of a puzzle. I just put it in my pocket. If I'm afraid of scratches, I put it in the slip sheath [left pocket so I can draw it with my right hand.] If I don't have keys or change that could scratch it, I put it naked in my right pocket. That's about it. A sheath seems a bit much. A clip might still not be a bad idea.

I've got a nice little Graley sheath for when I don't want to drop it in my pocket.

Dean,

I've always used the leather slip sheath and kept the lanyard on the knife to retrieve it from the sheath.

It's not very often you ask someone for a blade and see them reach in their pocket and slide their knife from a soft slip sheath. It says, "Here's something special!"

Enjoy the special aggravations of owning the best!

I'm with Smooth Bone.......put it in the sheath with the lanyard hanging out, or have Gary Graley make you up something special, however, it is "really" a small gentlemmen's pocket folder that probably is just best dropped in the pocket, maybe seperate from your coins. There are no plans to put a pocket clip on the Umfaan at this time per CRK s of just a few days ago.

BTW...that is a very nice unique graphic design Ralph! Hey..is it as hot up there in TN where you are as it is down here in the Memphis area? We are baking every day

Uh, ralphtt, that's what my knife looks like. CRK calls it a "Maple Leaf" CGG. I decided to order one after seeing a picture of yours some months ago. Does the sheath you got from Gary ride canted on the belt? Do you carry on the left side or right? How far out from the belt does it ride?

I may have to send Gary an e-mail...

Thanks for all the replies!

Dean, it's a canted sheath and rides very close to the belt . . . with the Umfaan, you hardly know it's there. Gary has a pix on his site . . . go here http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Cabin/7306/blades.html

It's the bottom sheath in the right hand column.

The Umfaan is so small a belt sheath hardly seems necessary, but it's handy. I also use the included CRK slip sheath at times.

And I remember when you got your Umfaan . . . glad you were able to get the precise one you wanted. :)

There you go Ralph. Tempting me with that darn maple leaf Umfaan again. When are you going to sell me that thing anyway?
Heres my new Umfaan. I carry it every day in the original sheath. It has the plain grey finish like the Sebenza. It is one of my favorites.

Mike . . . temp here in NE Tennessee has been peaking at about 85 F. But that's plenty hot for me and even the fish ain't biting during these dog days. My daughter now lives in Germantown and she's bringing the grandkids up to the the hill country for a few days next week . . . last chance before school starts so I'm trying to arrange some cooler days for their visit. ;)

Michael . . . I kinda' like the Canadian Maple Leaf Umfaan too . . . talk to Dean about his. He placed an order for one with CRK and got it a while later. Bet they would do the same for you.:p

Hi All, I came up with the canted pouch when I first received my Umfaan, which is a great small knife by the way!, and found it too small for a horizontal style sheath and just thought it would be handy being tilted and so it was.

The sheath of Ralphtt's was a special one in a couple of ways, first off the decoration of course and most important is that it was made so that the Fancy side would face to the outside Special request by Ralph, normally I make it the other way with the fancy side facing towards your belt. Protects the finish side better if you are not too careful. Also in Ralph's photo, which was a great shot Ralph!, Ralph had pulled the knife out of the sheath a bit so the design of the handle would show more for the picture, it normally rides deeper into the sheath, check on my web page, near the bottom on the right hand side for two shots of Umfaan sheaths, one light coloured with a smooth front and Ralph's that I scanned in before I shipped his out, it has my knife inside so there aren't any Maple leafs to show.

The sheath works well for me and a few others, once I made that other people just started ordering canted for the Sebenzas' as well....

i have stopped carrying my umfaan due to the lack of a pocket clip. the sheath makes the knife very bulky, and i hate to have a metal object like that just flipping and flopping around in my pants pocket. all because therte is no pocket clip on the reverse side :(

i will not put another item on my belt, like another sheath, so that is out of the question. now it just sits in it's sheath on my desk ...

When I get back from vacation, the very next expensive pocket knife I buy is going to be an Umfaan. (Ya hear that Mike? :)) However, I just didn't think that Umfaans came with plain scales. (Like the picture NCBlades posted.) I thought when you ordered one you just automatically got that new computer design. (With the spear and rising sun.) So the deal is that you have to ask for the model with the design? Is there a price difference?
By the way, at the last gun show I met a couple of guys who told me that they had been carrying their Sebenzas with the color on one scale for a long time. Both knives looked fine. Coins and keys had done no damage at all. Both these guys told me that they NEVER had used the soft pocket sheath. The color must be pretty durable.

The plain Umfaan costs the same as the standard models. One they have retired a yearly model it is no longer available.

I would go with the G2 or a clip case from William Henry. Both or either would work nicely. :D

My Umfaan usually rides in my right front pocket,
although I do have a G2 canted sheath that I carry from
time to time. It does a great job of hiding the knife and
doesn't get in the way.

The plain Umfaan has to be special ordered.

I wanted a matching Zulu Trio (Z3) :)

The best way to carry an Umfaan for me is in my watch pocket without the sheath.

OK. I took the advice and ordered a sheath from Gary Graley. It's just what I needed. Looks good and works great and at a good price.

Here's a picture that Gary took.
