So the CRK site says the Umfaan is being redesigned. Any ideas on the date the redesign is expected to be released?

It has been "being redesigned" for several years now........Chris is busy with so many designs right now, this may not be a priority. You can always email them and ask though !

exciting. but i still think they should go the other way and make a bigger folder. like a 4.25 inch blade almost 3/16ths thick.

I would buy one of those in a heartbeat:D but CRK has a fair amount of new knives out right now, so who knows.

Heck yeah I'd buy one, I love little knives and a mini sebenza would be awesome.

If CR would make a utilitarian model with regular ti scales I'd probably take two :)

I got to handle an Umf for the first time the other day. Dang they're tiny! I thought same size as Mnandi but no they're smaller. It would be cool to see a redesign but I still love the Mnandi and they don't need another small knife IMO.

Every time I talk to Heather I ask. Last time was about 5 days ago, and she laughed and made out that there's nothing on the horizon.

With the Nyala, the kitchen knives that are in proto, the Ti-Lock, and so on, I'm not sure there's much time for a new Umfaan, let alone inclination.

How are they coming along on that Small Umnumzaan?

Heh, now that's a question I should have asked!

Funny, though; the Umnumzaan didn't wow me the way my large Seb does (though it might have been the lack of coffee; it was 7am) and I find the small Seb hard to open — harder than the Mnandi one handed. Not sure how I would feel about a small Umnumzaan.

I have heard that the new Umfaan will be released on the 15th of Never.

Anyway, I think that puppy is overhyped. A Mnandi is comparable in size, cheaper in most cases, has the nice inlay to boot, and is not difficult to find. I also think that the tiny thumbstuds on my Umfaan are uncomfortable and they kinda dig into my thumb. The Umfaan is too small for really heavy use and I imagine that a fair number of people have had them slip out of their grip and cut themselves by accident. Maybe this could have prompted the "redesign"???

^^^ I disagree. It's like carrying a slipjoint, people have used them for years without any problems.

Although, I agree with most posters, it isn't going to happen. I would however buy one to add to my collection. I find them quite stunning actually...

...and people have sliced the heck out of their hands with slipjoints and swiss army knives and all manner of small, sharp objects. But you are free to disagree.

I like my Umfaan, but don't love it. I still think there is nothing it can do better than a small sized sebbie, other than the fact that it is dimensionally smaller. If you like the way it looks, good on ya.

From a business perspective, I wouldn't have discontinued a successful product unless it had some serious cost or liability issues. Since cost concerns don't enter into many CRK creations, and people are willing to shell out for good quality, I suspect liability. There's no reason, in my mind, to stop Umfaan production for a "redesign" just because the Mnandi was entering production at that time - the number and type of folders currently "on the line" is much greater than in the early 2000's.

I, personally, have always wished that they would put out a medium Sebenza. I love the large, but it is a bit more than I need. At the same time, I love the small, but another quarter inch or 3/8 would be perfect, in my opinion. I'm sure it would never happen, but it would be nice.
