Just scored an Umfaan in a trade today. I was wondering, how many of you Sebenza knuts carry an Umfaan? How hard do you use it? I have had a Sebenza before and it was one tough knife, do you think that the Umfaan lives up the standard? It looks like one awesome little knife.
Thanks guys,
Matt

The Umfaan is in all ways a mini Sebenza. In this case, small does not mean weak or inferior.

This one is the undisputed favorite of all my CR knives...

Jazzman -- Keep the Umfaan. You will really like it. Very tough little folder. I haven't found one tougher -- and I am a fan of small folders. I haven't put it to crazy use, but it has held up to the usual chores without flinching. Check out this link for a review by Perrin:

Matt,

I thought you missed your small Sebenza?

The small Sebenza can't be beat.

If you want something smaller; the Umfaan can't be beat.

It has the same vault like sound when you open it that the Sebenzas have.

The Umfaan is the best little knife out there. It's a keeper. I use mine mainly as a dress knife, but it's tough enough for EDC.

Umfaan - an excellent small knife.

I think most people have a need/use for a knife that is smaller than 2.5 inches.

I think it is by far the best of the high-end factory or semi-production folders, although I have not ever had/handled a House of Koji Hara knife, so there may be something there.

As you know Matt, I recently switched from an Umfaan over to a handmade Kansei Mitsuno 2.25 inch monolock folder. It is a very beautiful piece of pocket jewellry and every bit as effective a cutting instrument as the Umfaan. My only compliant on all of the very small folders is that the one-hand opening aspect is always a bit akward. The Umfaan lug is very small, and I could not always reliably catch the lug. The Mitsuno folder have a very innovative sleeved thumb stud that is more reliable. The only down side of this design is that the stud reduces the effective cutting length on the blade, wheras the lug on the Umfaan does not.

A trade off then. The Umfaan is very thin and you can put it anywhere without having a knife signature. The Mitsuno is much more beautiful, but I have to carry it in a leather pouch at work (clipped at other times).

****I do, that's why I got another Reeve. I was origionally aiming to get another Sebbie but I saw the Umfaan and I fell for it. I just got the Umfaan and I really like it. I see what you mean about the lugs though. Wow, Perrin uses his for defense? Well, figures ;)

The Umfaan is an excellent small knife, and part of my EDC. I work in an office/warehouse environment, and use it often. If the small Sebenza is too big, then the Umfaan should be perfect.

Solid and slim, the thin edge is still one of the sharpest I have.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Another question though, do you guys carry yours in the pouch or loose pocket or another way?
Thanks again,
Matt
***Nice pics you guys, mine is the arrow patter:D :D

I almost always carry a small pc knife as a back-up to whatever I'm carrying clipped to my pocket.

The Umfaan is my first choice in this role. I carry it loose & pouchless in my left pocket and never know it's there until I need it.

I also have a knife from Kansei Mitsuno en-route so we'll see tomorrow how a $470 custom stacks up to my ~$300 Umfaan.

If it's anything like the rest of my Sebs it should stack up just fine ;)

SAS,

I've got three Umfaans, millinnium , a plain circle and a blue circle Umfaan that's really pretty (my dress knife). I'd love to have that original gold to blue fade!

That is the best picture I've seen of the gold to blue circle Umfaan. Very well done!!

Thanks, that knife just seems to photograph well. Here's a closeup, it could be better but my antique (2 years old) digital camera just about ran out of lens...

Here's a link for some knife house koji hara knives.

They look really nice, but are definately gent knives. Now that I have carried the Umfaan, I see it's strength! I am even getting used to the lugs. But hey, Architect and Cprirtle, how are those Mitsunos? I had thought about buying one this summer (or a small Lum Chinese), but the hefty price tag has me feeling kinda wary. I really do like that model with the polished G10 scales though!

Jazzman -- have you seen the little production IMP by Jeff Hall. True North Knives has them or you can go to Hall's website. Good price too -- about $120.
