hey Guys!

just jumped in the CRK boat, I own a 2011 Umnumzaan since friday
I absolutely love the knife

I'm going away for a sailing week, did anyone have experience with a CRK and saltwater?
I'd like to take it with me, I know obviously what salt water doesd to a blade if not dried after use BUT, what about salty air? I live in Venice and water is around the corner and the air is "salty" and it hasn't given me troubles even with carbon steels

but what about when on a boat? it a bit different and worse, would crk's s30v get some rust spots or pit?
don't have a takedown tool yet do It'd be hard to clean it well, I'd like to keep it well for a while before using it a lot

thanks
Maxx

I live in Taiwan where it's rather hot and humid for a large part of the year (and my CRKs live in my hot sweaty pocket as well :p). I have carried my Sebenza and Umnumzaan in and around the sea quite regularly.
In my experience you can expect a "rust rash" on the blade if you don't keep it washed and clean. You will also find a bit of rust build up in those low traffic areas, like around the thumb stud and in the jimping. That said, I find that they don't really want to rust up and you will need to be pretty nasty to your knife to have any real problems with rust. Keeping the knife clean and washed with fresh water will be just fine. Even with out the take down tool the Umnumzaan is pretty easy to keep clean and lubed. :)

thanks Haze
don't even know if it will be used or not, won't take into the sea but the salty air has sometimes shown rust spost on blades and liners/screws, that was my main thought
seems like the crk will "suffer" the salty air like any other knife out there

It will but I find they do pretty well IMO, S30V is a stainless after all so it can handle a week at the beach with out any problems. I have only had the "rust rash" when I have been drunk as a lord and not botherd to look after my knife for a few days. :foot:.....:p:thumbup:

CRK's excel around saltwater. Even snorkeled at Grand Cayman with my small Regular years ago. Simply rinse with freshwater directly after saltwater emmersion, then breakdown, clean, and re-lube every few days (take your Allen wrench and lube with you).

The takedown design, IMO, makes it a great saltwater environment folder. The 303 stainless hardware is very "stainless," and the blade is the only Achille's heel, as it were, requiring rinsing with freshwater in the pivot area and cleaning every few days as mentioned.

A ti-blade option would be cool for Seb's; a true saltwater knife.

seems that the blade won't suffer much from the air then
it won't (hopefully!) get in contact with water or underwater, only with some boat life and some casual slashes or so but no direct contact, will clean and dry it in that case

never took a s30v blade on a boat, hence my question, took many in 1095 A2 154cm D2....but never S30v LOL should be better being pretty stainless and much more than the others
is the stonewashing of the blade more resistant to rusting/pitting than beadblast, satin and similars? had some pitting on kershaw blasted blades and satin knives, only have 2-3 stonewashed ones but never took any on a boat

have to look for the takedown tool I belive...think I need one

Blade finish will be more resistent to oxidation than beadblast or satin finishes. The only more resistent natural (uncoated) finish in my experience would be a mirror or near mirror finish, which is no fun on a user.

Mad Maxx, Thanks for the question! I don't plan on seeing salt water anytime soon (to my disappointment), but thanks a lot for the question! I'm a runner and I sweat a lot and have been hesitant in carrying any knives with me. I might give it a try now thanks to this thread!
