Ummm...what should I do?

Hi I am new to the forums. I have a question. I own a BM-E use it very hard. I went on a chopping spree and now the edge looks like the bellows of an accordian. What should I do? I don't want to send it away to be sharpened because I like having it around all the time. Also, I have chopped with it so much that there is very little coating left...would the warranty be voided if I satin finished the blade by hand?
Also, I owned a Satin Jack CG. The reason why I sold it was because the edge and blade was too think to slice, chop or do any kind of cutting effectively. I mean no offense but I find the knife to be useless. Is there anything else that cuts better?

I am a relative noob here, but can handle that first question for you.

What kind of Warranty covers the knife?
The warranty explained by Jerry Busse:
"Busse Combat is proud to have the toughest warranty in the industry. Busse Combat Grade, Combat Basics, and Combat Customs are guaranteed for life against any and all MAJOR damage.

We have been asked recently how modifications of our knives might affect our warranty. Modifications can change the very nature and authorship of a knife. Simply put, we cannot warrant workmanship that we do not perform. Specifically, if you have modifications done to your knife, outside of our shop, and the modifications adversely affect the integrity and/or performance of your knife, causing it to fail, then it should be noted that "OUR" warranty will not cover "YOUR" modifications. For example: If you have mastodon ivory grips put on your Steel Heart II by someone outside of our shop, then our warranty will continue to cover everything except the ivory grips. So be careful. Busse Combat encourages extreme usage of our blades as they are without question "The Toughest Knives in the World".

Hmmm - I chopped down all these trees this afternoon with my Assault Shaker, and the blade still looks good as new. Perhaps your technique isn't smooth enough? Remember to follow through, and keep your shoulder loose - makes all the difference. :)

What exactly does this mean? How deep was the damage induced, and of what nature, chips, rolls, impactions etc. . What exactly were you chopping?

I don't want to send it away to be sharpened because I like having it around all the time.

The obvious answer then is to just sharpen it. The only reason you would not is if you suspect that there is something wrong with the blade and that it should not have been damaged in the first place. If this is the case then why would you want to keep it as it is defective.

And don't forget to keep your wrist loose. Too tight, and several years of chopping later, there's a risk of repetitive stress injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

Practice safe chopping. ;)

I have beat mine into rocks, steel fence's, my gas meter and concrete and haven't done very much damage to it.
What were you chopping?

Please give us the particulars.

Sorry the SJ didn't work for you, it's one of my favorites.
I have used one of my ZT's for every thing and it is 1/4" also.
I have a 3/16" set up for Diving but I haven't used it much yet.
I also have my 3/16" LE coming next week, I'll let you know how it does.

I do have to admit that the SJ hasn't been getting beat as much now as it did before.
Every since the 3/16" SH Variants have been hitting the bricks I find my self using them more and more.;)

Any way, looking forward to hearing your story and seeing those pictures.

I too would like to see pics of the blade. I have chopped, pryed and beaten Busse blades and would like to see what you could have possibly done to that blade. No matter however, as Jerry will make it right - no doubt.

Unfortunate you did not like the Satin Jack. Mine is .250" and I love it. Did you sell it on the Forums? Anybody I know? I could use another and would give you a fair price if it was still around. Let me know. Thanks.
 
I received an email from Little Tea Pot. He explained that he was chopping on some bushes late at night and was surprised to see that the edge had small spots that appeared to be dull. He said a couple of strops and they were gone and the knife was back to super sharp. He was surprised that chopping on bushes had had a negative effect on his INFI edge. He went out and examined the bush after his post here and said that he didn't realize that he had been slicing through the branches so quickly that he had also been chopping into a galvanized pipe that stood behind the bush.


Luckily, he was able to easily strop the edge back to killer sharp.

Thanks for getting back to me an explaining for me what happened on the forums. The funny thing is, I can't believe it didn't do more. I mean, it was hitting the damn pipe nearly full force on the finishing stroke into the bushes. How the knife survived with hardly any damage I don't know. The reason I got so concerned and posted here was because I thought I was just hitting shrubs....haha until I saw the pipe this morning. Two minutes on a fine stone and I was back in business. All the pipe did was flatten the edge and then slightly "accordian" it. (I guess my initial post was a little severe) Over all, I am EXTREMELY pleased with the performance of my BM-E. Maybe next time I need to cut a pipe....uhhh well I don't think so:):):)
Jerry, one last queston. I want to hear straight from you...if I satin finish my BM then does that void the warranty? Thanks!
P.S. Now onto the 3/16 Satin Jack! It would be like a LMS with a longer blade. Definitely a must have!!! Thanks guys for the help and comments.

Putting a satin finish on your knife using Wet/Dry sand paper and a little elbow grease and you'll be fine. :D:D This will not void the warranty.

If you choose some other more destructive method, that could cause a problem. (ie. no blow torches to remove the black finish :D:D)

LTP, Welcome aboard. Well, you beat me on this one as I have never chopped pipe:eek: with any of my Busse knives.

Back to the more mundane things like chopping wood :rolleyes: , digging, batonning, slicing, skinning, pepperoni and cheese dividing, sauce stirring, bacon flipping, marshmellow stick making, lobster whacking ...:D
