i got me an umnum the other day. brand new!!! the lockup however is at around 78% i like the stability that adds, but am not too sure about lomgevity.....

please advise

I'm sure others will weigh in on this, but I seem to remember some talk recently about the same issue. If I remember correctly, it's a matter of how you are looking at the blade/lockbar and something to do with the ceramic ball found on the Umnumzaan. Again- I'm sure others that are more proficient than I will weigh in.

yeah ive been lookin at the ceramic ball, shes at about at 60% i suppose its allright. i guess i just needed my freak out quota for the day.

From what I hear that's normal for this knife, Mine came brand new at around 90%
and it's been no trouble.
Congrats on the new Umnumzaan:-)

Mine is about the same as yours, and I am not worried in the least. The knife locks up tighter than any other folder I've ever owned...but it's only my first CRK! ;)

Congratulations on your Umnumzaan!

Bought one in October of 2008 had much the same question:

Original Post -

I assume that lockup of the Umnumzaan should be somewhere around 50%. So I just got mine today and it is close to 100%.
Can anyone tell me if this is correct before I contact Chris Reeve Knives.
Feels really solid but I have a suspicion that it shouldn't be this far engaged.

Thank you for your email and congratulations on your Umnumzaan. As you are probably realizing the Umnumzaan is a bit different then the Sebenza. On the Umnumzaan the interface between the titanium lock bar and the back of the blade is a ceramic ball, inset into the titanium just off the corner of the lock bar. In order for the ceramic ball to rest between 50-75% across the back of the blade the whole bar has to be a bit further toward the center of the knife. This is intentional and is the correct position. The lock bar of your knife is absolutely fine and completely within spec. Please let me know if you have any other concerns.

Enjoy your knife.

Heather

It's all good:thumbup:

great thanks guys. i guess i can get started on some projects then. i dont have to send her in for a tuneup.

From the "some words from Chris" sticky at the top of the page.

With the Umnumzaan, because the interface between the blade and the lock bar is a ceramic ball, it is the ball that must be at 50 – 75%. This will give the visual that the lock bar is further over than with a Sebenza
