Umnum's lock & clip combo...

OK, this was odd, so I'm seeing if anyone's come across this. I've had a few Sebs & 1 Umnum. The Umnum, which I've had since almost the beginning of the yr, has pretty much replaced my lg. Seb. However, I do like having & carrying my small Seb when I don't want the larger knife.

So, I have a small classic Seb along with the Umnum. The Umnum's clip was pretty snug, while the Sebs wasn't. Since I like using a lanyard on the small Seb, I don't mind a snug clip on it, so I swapped clips.

The small Seb seemed fine & the lock-bar might've moved just a tiny bit more toward the center. However, I immediately noticed the Umnum's lock-up was definitely lighter. In fact, if I gently open the blade, you can actually tap on the blade spine & it'll close. Has anyone noticed this? I'm guessing it's because of the ceramic ball. Since the lock face isn't a relatively flat lock-bar, the ceramic ball might slide off a bit. Now, if I thumb it open with decent force, lock-up's fine, but I just noticed that a soft opening won't fully open it.

Has anyone noticed this or is this mainly because of the clip? As I said, it only happened when I swapped clips & the clip that I put on it, doesn't rest against the lock-bar like the other one does.

I have removed the clip on my umnumzaan & my other 5 Sebenza's & replaced them with the clip inserts. The only difference I have found is they feel way better in your hand. Opening & lock-up has not changed.

bend your clip. hold it at the hole and flex at the bump in middle, don't use too much force. I recommend doing it by hand and just flexing 3-4 times until your thumb hurts. your clip will be nice 'n' tight.

remember don't bend it:eek: just flex:cool:

The pocket clip has nothing to due with lock-up, I have mine in my hands right now with no pocket clip on it and as slow as I can move the blade to open when it get to full open the lock bar jumps over about to 60 percent or so to the right.

absolutly correct... I like to keep my knife in my pocket so I keep the clip tight. every now and then you snag on something and need to adjust. If the lock up isn't right you need to flex the lock bar but I would recommend sending to CRK for that!

Well, I'll try flexing the clip. I'll admit that none of the 5 different Sebs that I've had have been any different with the clip on or off, but on the Umnum, there was a definite difference. With the snug clip, it didn't matter how I opened it, the lock-bar locked the blade nice & solid, but with the loose clip, there is a definite difference.

Again, no issue with the Seb, but there is a definite difference with the Umnum. It was odd & that's why I'm asking if anyone else has had this with their Umnumzaan, not their Seb.

I would call CRK tomorrow and talk to Heather, She will have your answer and or will get the answer for you ASAP. Phone number 208-375-0367

This is the same for me (my clip is still attached but I held it off the lock bar to test and got the same results)

i have not noticed that in almost exactly the same combination: umnum and small 21.

The clip tension may or may not affect integrity of lockup, but it definitely affects the reverse tension needed to unlock and close the knife. I can tell a significant difference between unlocking/closing my Seb's with a clip and unlocking/closing my Seb with the clip insert that I carry in a G2 leather sheath. Unlocking tension on my Seb with the clip insert is definitely lighter.

In fact, while I don't know this for sure, I'd guess that this is why CRK went with the whimpier clips in the past few years. If you'll notice, the thickness of the ti clips is noticeably less on newer models. I'm betting they did this to ease the unlocking tension on Seb's, but only CRK could say for sure.

The pocket clip has nothing to due with lock-up

It did on MINE.
On mine, the clip was the MAIN source of spring for the lock-bar.
Had to disassemble and spring the lock further.
Otherwise, it wouldn't open far enough to get the ball across enough to resist SLIGHT(I mean slight)spine pressure, applied with 1-2 fingers, with the clip removed.
Now it opens with tank-like lock-up:thumbup:
Not nearly so quiet( it was entirely silent if opened slowly before), but far safer.

Well after taking mine apart I think you guys are right about the pocket clip creating spring tension on the lock bar. Mine works fine with the pocket clip removed but I can see if pocket clip does not have enough tension on the lock bar wont move over far enough.

Well I called CRK today on this problem and talked to Clay in the shop, The pocket clip will change the lock up if you remove it sometimes, It puts tension on the lock bar, To correct the problem you have to disassemble the knife and TWEEk the lock bar a little, This is a normal condition that occurs after time and not a flaw or problem as per Clay.
All 6 of mine lock up fine and I have all the pocket clips removed & clip inserts installed. !!! Hope This Answers Some Questions Guys !!!

Thank you! That does help knowing that & it makes sense. As I said, my small Seb wasn't an issue, but the Umnum was, however, it's fine now.
