Having seen all the threads on the Umnumzaan and discs, steel, variations, worry, concern, questions, discussions... all you really need to know is that it works.

S30V Tanto, no disc, no Idaho Stamp -- just a rugged piece of steel ready to get busy.

Needed to a) punch a hole in the ice of a pool liner to insert a hose b) cut twine and hose clamp c) dig around and clear up some twigs and leaves and crap. COLD (34 degrees or so) and the Umnumzaan went in a few times, just wiped off and put back in pocket.

MORAL OF THE STORY - USE 'EM.

I thought the moral of the story was going to be move to Palm Springs :D
Seriously though, think how inexpensive it is to just buy an Umnumzaan....there it is, justified for anyone needing a reason ;)

Today marks two years of carrying my Umnumzaan as my work EDC. A comfortable and reliable tool that has never let me down.

I really need to get an Umnumzaan.

You're right about the "use 'em" strategy. Every time I use my Sebenzas I truly enjoy it and appreciate the knife more.

It won't be too long before I'm up to three years EDC on my Umnumzaan and I only have good things to say. :)

This is just what I need. I can justify it but Lisantica I need you to talk to the wife.

Never say never :p But I'm sure you know her...not sure why more women don't like knives.

I have used my umnumzaan for everything you would put a folding knife through and it has shined. I whittled, battoned wood, used it for food prep, cut rope, used it as a scraper plane, used it to cut shingles and tar paper. Its scratched to no end, but I love it. Its the toughest folder I have ever handles. As much as I love my large regular sebenzas, I must admit the umnumzaan is tougher. Its the sebenza's Big Brother so to speak.

I've used my Umnumzaan to dislodge shell casings, strip wire, cut solid core silver wire for my audio cables that I build (it's relatively soft), cut probably hundreds of yards of cardboard so far, and all it ever needs is a strop and it's back in action. I pity those who don't use their Sebenzas/Umnumzaans(unless they have a collection of the dang things) because thats like having a drawer full of Snap-On tools that you never use!

If you guys don't believe me, here is my knife, used but not abused

Sexy broken in lockup (bits of steak in the pivot/tang area):

What I thought was not normal due to how far over the lockbar was, was actually because it was broken in and most people don't actually use their Umnumzaans aside from the few of us in this thread haha.

That's how the lock up looks on all the Umnumzaans I've seen. Have you noticed if the lock up noise became louder the more you used it? Mine started out really quiet but now it's almost as loud as a Sebenza locking. I guess the o-rings are wearing out.

I guess I'd be checking that my insurance card was in my wallet before I left home... ;) :o   :barf: :barf: :barf:

Question: Why, isn't the more lockup you have the less chance you have of an accidental closing? This is what your referring to, right?

It works different on the Zaan apparently... the ceramic ball is in the middle of the lockbar I think so it's technically 50% lockup still.

I've checked a few threads and it's completely normal

No, I was referring to leaving old meat in the folder. :barf: :D

Well I guess I'll find out about the broken in lock up first hand. Lisa, I'm putting it all on you!
