So I just did a trade for an Umnumzaan and I was just checking it out and noticed the O rings have kind of squished.

I felt them and they were kind of sticky.

The knife was made in 2012. Could these be the stock ones and they just went bad from sitting for so long?

Anyone have a spare set or two of the Chris Reeve polyurethane ones they don’t need :)

Also the blade is a tiny bit off center. Tightening the pivot should fix that on an Umnumzaan right?

Stock o-rings will degrade. Grab some Viton ones, dash size 006. McMaster sells 100 for like $5.

Aren’t the polyurethane ones Chris Reeve puts on them the most durable available?

I would rather keep it completely stock even though the o rings aren’t that big of deal. LoL

Hey, jeepin jeepin I’m out of town through the weekend, but I might have a pair of genuine CRK O-rings that I installed briefly then immediately removed (because I like the hardware store variety better).

I’ll confirm when home, but they’re yours if you want ‘em.

Yes definitely.

Thank you.

Good stuff!

And I've got a set of the Viton you can try...PM me your address and I'll mail em to ya! :)

Anybody have ideas on fixing the Blade centering?

Do I need to put Allen wrenches on both sides and tighten them both at the same time?, or just one Allen wrench in the show side scale?

It’s a free spinning pivot. You’ll probably need a wrench on each side. On re assembly, I use low-strength LocTite (purple, 222) on the pivot. Once I get it adjusted to my liking, I let it sit for a day to allow the LocTite to cure.

Thanks for the info.

One more question.

Mine is a 2012 and it didn’t come with the Allen wrenches.

What year did Chris Reeve start adding them with the knives?

AFAIK, the wrenches were included when the pivot changed from the old style to the new. You got yours second hand and the seller just didn't include them. If you want them, buy them from the CRK website - the wrench kit is only $3 (https://chrisreeve.com/collections/crk-parts/products/wrench-set?variant=26422534725) plus a little over $3 shipping. They are also available in the service kit along with the fluorinated grease, Loctite, and a microfiber cloth for $20.(https://chrisreeve.com/collections/crk-parts/products/service-kit).

That’s what I was afraid of. He told me the 2012’s didn’t come with the Allen wrenches or the grease.
Maybe he just said that so he could keep them for his other knives. Oh well I guess I will just have to order a set of the wrenches and grease from Chris Reeve.

Thank you for the quick reply :)

The wrenches can be difficult to keep track of, and the grease is what is called a "consumable", so I'm not surprised that you didn't get them if he couldn't put his hands on them. A set of $3 wrenches isn't worth worrying about, and seven-year-old grease isn't either.

As for the centering, you might try a "trick" that is recommended by some for a Hinderer - leave the backspacer screw just a little loose and tighten down the pivot all the way. Then tighten the backspacer screw all the way. The blade should be centered. Then loosen the pivot a little at a time until you get the action you want. It may not work for you, but it's worth a try.

jeepin jeepin check you PM’s. I found the briefly-installed O-rings. I thought I had a brand new set around too, but can’t find them at the moment.

If your ‘Zaan is off center, the first thing I would try is disassembly, cleaning, and careful reassembly. If that doesn’t work, try swapping the sides the washers are on.

As a very last resort, you can try lapping down one of the washers on 1000 grit sandpaper then finishing on a strop. Before doing so, you might give CRK a call to confirm they’re still willing to mail out replacement Umnumzaan washers in case you dork it up. They only charge a few bucks, if they’re still doing it.
