Question...
I noticed that about 1/2 from the tip of the blade there is what looks like a noticeable grind line (from blade spine to edge, only on the stonewashed area).

This "line" is on both sides of the blade in same area.

Anyone else notice this? Is this just how they were ground?

are you talking about the swedge? It is the same on both sides if that is what you are talking about. Here is a pic

No, not the swedge...
on your pic of the blade, come back from the tip 1/2".
The "line" or grind line would be going vertical.

After looking at mine very closely, It appears this is where the blade was angled on both sides in forming the tip, instead of one fluid motion.

I can try to take some pics later today.

I know what you mean, I have that on my Umnum as well.

I can just feel it if I pinch the blade and run my fingers over the area so
it is the grind and not just part of the finish or anything like that.

Yeah, that's it Haze...
I cant really feel mine, but it does show by looking down the side of the blade or when the light hits it just right.

I'll try to get some pics up...

Ok...not the best pic, but it shows where it is located..

Note: Same location on both sides.

I'm just trying to decide if it needs to go back to be corrected or not...

I'll send the pics & call CRK Monday and see what they say.

I've examined mine, and pinched the blade and all that, but I haven't seen or felt anything unusual. Frankly, I'm not quite sure what you're talking about.

Would be nice to see what CRK says about it.

That's a good thing then, yours does not have this grinding mark then.

Frankly, I'm not quite sure what you're talking about.

Reference the picture I posted above...the entire area right of the arrows appears to be ground at an angle towards the tip.
Instead of the entire blade having a smooth even flow the entire length, from tang to tip(as yours seems to be), mine is smooth up to the area marked in my photo...then it has a slight different angle to it.

...Hope this helps clear it up for anyone else who may not understand.

Thanks, that does clear it up. I can see it in the photo now. That does seem like a peculiar grind, and that's peculiar for Chris Reeve.
Definitely drop them a line, and see what they have to say about it.

That is exactly where it is on my knife too. On my Umnum. it actually seems more prominant on the lock side of the blade but clearly visible on both.

It will be interesting to hear what CRK say about it.

The answer:

I spoke with Josiah DeMill...
The hollow grind on the Umnumzaan is done by a CNC machine...and that "line" which is visible on some of the blades is at the break point where is has to begin making its angle in towards the tip.

He said they have noticed that line and little by little they have made slight adjustments to the CNC program to adjust for this, and for the most part it is pretty much there...but very difficult to make a flawless flow with those type of angles on a CNC...but they are always working to improve on this.
Some blades may show it more than others...and some not at all.

Bottom Line...
Nothing to be concerned about! :)
I figure it just makes it a bit unique as being one of the "first generation" Umnumzaan's.

BTW...Just to be curious, I asked about cost for a new blade...$129.00
