Umnumzaan Ceramic Ball Placement - Sebenza

Just a random thought as I joyfully play with my first Umnumzaan the Fedex man brought me an hour ago...

Why not take the concept of the ceramic ball placement from the Umnumzaan and incorporate it into the Sebenza design? It seems to make for a relatively smoother action and a very smooth release of the lockbar. What's not to like about it?

And I'm sure this has been discussed before, but wouldn't a small version of the 'zaan be cool?

The ceramic ball even though a revolutionary design is about the only thing I do not like about the zaan. It is indeed smoother. But I like th hear that "Click" the sebenza makes when it is LOCKED open. With the zaan since its SOOO Smooth and Quiet, I always have to Look to make sure its locked. I think its just that I am used to the sebenza, but I still like that audible click. I also feel that the sebenza has much more of a locking surface than the ceramic ball..............In the end though, I find the Zaan to b a True Work Horse of a knife. I have been doing a kitchen remodel and have used the zaan extensively during the process, yesterday I even used it as a scraper plane. I posted pics in another thread to show you. Its easily to pick at perfection.......lol. Just some thoughts is all. The more I use my zaan, the more I fall in love with it. Ever since I got it in a trade ( traded a SNG for it ), my sebenza has been a safe queen.

I like my small sebenza, but the large is more comfortable in my hand for EDC. A small zaan would be cool, I just hope if one should come out that its a little longer than a small sebbie to fit my hand better.

It will be hard to beat the full sized zaan as you get more leverage during heavy cutting chores. Though I think that depends more on hand size.

In the end, the zaan is an excellent knife, just what you would expect from CRK, my only regret is that I waited so long to get one !!!

nyefmaker, I saw your 'zaan post and I appreciate the pictures.. always nice to see CRK's in use!

I also like the click/thwack sound, but the smoothness of the 'zaan trumps it in my opinion.

yeah, we had a good discussion about the opening sounds of the sebbie and the ummie in a post recently, opinions varied a lot. I don't have a problem with either. but the absence of the click sound is more because of the o-rings on the thumb studs than anything else, certainly not much to do with the ceramic ball.
The umnumzaan is so extremely smooth and I for one would love to see that in sebenzas too, although they are also way up there in smooth openings

oh and congrats of course on a fantastic knife big red, good to hear we have another fan. I think nyefmaker and I are both very much ambassadors for the zaan and what a great knife it is, glad to hear you like it too!

i would love to a SM zaan...ive been thinking really hard on to getting one...

Small Umnum yes (to replace my Regular Small Sebenza yes since I do not like the feel of the small 21), Small Sebenza with ceramic ball......no thanks. I prefer the integral lock the way it is on the Sebenza. It was designed that way and feels just right. Its like a Spyderco needs a Spyderhole, not thumbstuds, a Umnum has the ceramic ball lockup, not the Sebenza. For me its just part of history and I like it that way.

Well... then it wouldn't be a Sebenza anymore would it?

Personally I like the Sebenza just the way it is.

Kind regards,

Jos

Dude, what happened to the kangeroo sig? There's no elephants in Belgium OR australia :)

I really like my Umnumzaan, right out of the box it was butter smooth. My first Sebenza was also smooth out of the box, but not quite as smooth. Difference is, as time passes my Sebenza (I've had it for about 1.5 years now) gets smoother the Umnumzaan is the same as the day I pulled it out of the box. I did notice a huge difference between using oil (remoil, 3n1, whatever it's all oil) and the CRK fluorinated grease on all of my knives.

+1 for a small Umnumzaan. I don't carry my Umnumzaan as often as my Sebenza(s) mostly because even though the lg Sebenza and the Umnumzaan are just about the same size, the Sebenza doesn't seem to garner as much negative attention, a smaller Umnumzaan might just help with that.

The ball just glides against surface for opening doesnt it ? or is the ball acting as lock surface also ?
