Umnumzaan detent problem?

Hey guys, I just got an Umnumzaan from BHQ. I love the knife, however there seems so be some play with the blade seating. When in the closed position, the blade can move around and allows the tip to sit proud. The tip sits high enough that I could open the knife with my fingernail:confused: It feels like the detent hole is too large for the detent ball.

How are your Umnumzaan's? Do they seat like the Sebenza? My Sebenza sits in the closed position without any play at all. Should I send this one into CRK or are Umnumzaan's like this???

Here's a pic of my fingernail touching the tip

That's definitely not normal. The one I had had a strong, positive detent with absolutely no play. Call CRK they'll probably have you send the knife in. Or maybe bhq will replace it for you too...

The two I have are not like that. They have a strong detent. Looks like you need to send it back to BladeHQ or CRK.

I've had 4 Umnum's of my own and have handled at least 3 others, NONE of them had that issue. The worst I've seen on an Umnum is a weak detent.

Send it back to BHQ, it has issues. There's no reason that you should have to wait for CRK to repair it when it's faulty from the get go, an exchange through BHQ is the way to go after spending the money that you did to get that fine knife. BHQ are pretty good people, I have no doubt that they'll take care of you on e you tell them what's going on.

I hope that it's a quick turn around for you and am sorry for your luck, I don't remember ever seeing another Umnum with a legitimate issue straight from the factory- rare issue I'm sure.

Yea, that's not right....What are the thumb stud o-rings like ? I have seen a similar problem with one knife and the guy had put ill fitting orings on that stopped the detent seating properly when closed and made the lock up a little early when open. Try taking the o-rings off the thumbstuds and see if that fixes the problem. :)

Send the fotos and your concerns to BHQ. They will take care of you and will probably send the knife back to CRK.

I took the o-rings off and it still had the same issue:( that was the first thing I thought of, thanks though:thumbup:
I looked at the seating with a jewelers loupe and it looks like the detent hole isn't centered with the ceramic ball. I'm calling BHQ and hopefully they'll have another Umnum in stock:D

I didn't read your post properly and didn't realise you had a new knife. :foot: You definitely have something not right there for sure, a shame indeed to have to send it back but you will be fixed up one way or an other. :)

Definitely send it back to BHQ, not CRK. CRK warranty/spa is great (according to almost unanimous consensus) but you'll be waiting 6 weeks on a knife you already received once. BHQ will definitely send you another one due to the defect, and the time without your new knife will be no longer than a week.

Thanks guys, I'm sending it back to BHQ. Unfortunately they don't have any left in stock:( so I'll be getting it from another dealer. I'm surprised this one made it past QC, but oh well, weirder things have happened:)

Before you send it back take it to a hardware store. Go to where they have the bins of screws and such. As Haze said, it is probably the orings. I've purchased orings from a hardware store to put them on one of my used Zaans and it does EXACTLY that. Sticks out that exact same amount.

I was still in the parking lot of the hardware store, so I went back in, told them what was up, walked to the bin where I got my orings and put about 10-12 of them on the shelf. I looked for the thinnest ones and selected 4 or so. I put them on the knife and that tip you see no longer existed.

There is a good chance that knife was purchased, the one-time owner changed the rings and then returned it. Stranger things have happened.

I'd try that before sending it back. Let us know how that affects it...

Well I got a replacement Umnum today, and this one has the same exact problem. It's not the same knife since its from a different dealer. These two knives were made recently; the first was October 2014, and this one is September 2014. Maybe this is a recent problem, but I find it very surprising that 2 umnumzaan's in a row had the same exact problem.

I called CRK and explained the problem to Heather and she agreed that it's sounds like defective knives. I'll be sending this one to CRK for fixing, which sucks because I was confident the 2nd would be perfect:(

I really want to know why I got 2 defects in a row? Maybe a new guy is running the machines, who knows? It's just frustrating since I associate CRK with absolute perfection:( and this knife is not...

Well, I'm confident CRK will fix me up right, however this all really sucks because I'm in love with this knife! I almost wanna accept the defect so I can use it for work tomorrow:p but knowing that my knife is not within spec is pretty lame.
I'll post a follow up when all the smoke clears.

That is really disappointing, the anticipation is bad enough the first go around let alone twice. You are doing it the right way better not to be hasty this way at least you should end up with a perfect knife. I know in the scheme of things its not up there with world peace but I do feel for you. Good luck and post lots of pictures of your perfect Umnumzaan when it arrives, I am sure they are picking one out now in anticipation of fixing your problem.

I'll trade you one for that guitar.

BHQ should send you a $20 gift certificate for the PITA you have to go through.

It almost looks the ones being sold on some street corners in NYC.

Wow!
It sucks that this happened to you twice and the wait to get it back from CRK will feel like an eternity.
I've been there, my first Zaan had some marks on the blade that I didn't like, called CRK, sent it in, they told me that it was completely normal and within spec, them made me a new blade for it because I didn't like that blade- pretty amazing service from them for something that they didn't think was wrong !

From my experience these are the limited warranty issues that they are known for making RIGHT and will do it quickly, the few times that you here the negative comments mainly revolve around spa treatment type issues or slightly uneven grinds when sharpening a blade. Don't fret, you're Umnum will be worth the wait when it arrives in the condition it should've the first time and you may just get a free shirt out of it :)

Please let us all know how it works out for you and don't make the mail person feel like they need to take a restraining order out on you :)

That's not too handy for you at all. At least you will get the knife you were hoping for after CRK fix you up. I'll send some Celtic good luck vibes your way. :p:thumbup:

After a one month vacation to Idaho, my Umnumzaan has found its way back home to me. And I think it got a nice workout out there! The detent is perfect now, and they sent it back with a nice (almost) mirror polished edge.

This edge is the sharpest edge I've ever gotten out of a box! It actually splits hairs! That's something I've never seen on an out-of-the-box production knife. I think that was CRK's way of saying sorry.

Funny thing is, I just missed the ups guy by seconds. I saw him driving away as I turned down my street. There was that little note on the door saying something like "pick this item up after 7pm", and it said something about Idaho. I knew right away it was gonna be a long wait until 7pm.

Now my Seb can take a breather. It's seen a lot in the 3 months I've had it.

Thanks for making things right CRK! You guys have me for life!

That was a bit of a long road you had to take, but I'm glad to hear you get there in the end. :p:thumbup:

A long road indeed! It felt so good to open that package and find a perfect Umnum inside.

Next journey, Mnandi!
