Last year I made the decision to purchase my first Chris Reeve folder and picked up a small 21. As many learn, one isn't enough and soon I was looking for another. Up until that point I had always carried a small pocket knife so when I got the small 21 it was the largest knife I had EDCd. The Umnumzaan was the blade that got my interest in Chris Reeve but the size of the folder deterred me and I went with the small 21. However, in the market for my second, I was again looking at the Umnumzaan. Right about that time the 25 began the hit the market and with sporadic complaints about difficulty opening and recommendations that the 25 would be a better choice, I was a good lemming and went with the 25. Instantly feel in love with the look, feel and performance of the 25 and within a day or 2 the larger size was not only overlooked but favored.
Life was good .right? I had a workhorse next generation Ti folder but for some reason I couldnt stop obsessing on that dam Umnumzaan. Attempted to satisfy my obsession with a few small Spydercos and a Sprint Manix 2 but it didnt work. Mornings and night were spent on the exchange contacting sellers from post as far back as I could find and calling dealers with the hope of finding the right one. I wanted the older style pivot and (contrary to the general consensus) a LBS with logo. Bingo! Diligence paid off this Monday when I found a NIB knife at a small shop back east. With a birthday of July 24, 2012 it must be one of the last they made before switching to the new pivot. They even discounted the price when I called.
Too impatient to wait for an afternoon delivery, I had the shipper hold the package and first thing in the morning I found myself sitting in the UPS parking lot unfolding the infamous blue cloth. The prize at the center looked better than any internet photo or glamour shot Ive saved to the folder on my desktop. Considering, it was the first time I had ever held an Umnumzaan the fear of difficult deployment and closing was present but immediately put to rest. This Fin thing opens smoother than my 25 was the exact quote I said out loud. Surprisingly, I also find it easier to close.
Apologize for being infatuated and long winded when talking about my new Chris Reeve, but this knife has been speaking to me for a while. Shame on me for not listening sooner.
Here are couple pics I took in the office today as I typed this.
