Last year I made the decision to purchase my first Chris Reeve folder and picked up a small 21. As many learn, one isn't enough and soon I was looking for another. Up until that point I had always carried a small pocket knife so when I got the small 21 it was the largest knife I had EDC’d. The Umnumzaan was the blade that got my interest in Chris Reeve but the size of the folder deterred me and I went with the small 21. However, in the market for my second, I was again looking at the Umnumzaan. Right about that time the 25 began the hit the market and with sporadic complaints about difficulty opening and recommendations that the 25 would be a better choice, I was a good lemming and went with the 25. Instantly feel in love with the look, feel and performance of the 25 and within a day or 2 the larger size was not only overlooked but favored.

Life was good….right? I had a workhorse next generation Ti folder but for some reason I couldn’t stop obsessing on that dam Umnumzaan. Attempted to satisfy my obsession with a few small Spyderco’s and a Sprint Manix 2 but it didn’t work. Mornings and night were spent on the exchange contacting sellers from post as far back as I could find and calling dealers with the hope of finding the right one. I wanted the older style pivot and (contrary to the general consensus) a LBS with logo. Bingo! Diligence paid off this Monday when I found a NIB knife at a small shop back east. With a birthday of July 24, 2012 it must be one of the last they made before switching to the new pivot. They even discounted the price when I called.

Too impatient to wait for an afternoon delivery, I had the shipper hold the package and first thing in the morning I found myself sitting in the UPS parking lot unfolding the infamous blue cloth. The prize at the center looked better than any internet photo or glamour shot I’ve saved to the folder on my desktop. Considering, it was the first time I had ever held an Umnumzaan the fear of difficult deployment and closing was present but immediately put to rest. “This F’in thing opens smoother than my 25” was the exact quote I said out loud. Surprisingly, I also find it easier to close.

Apologize for being infatuated and long winded when talking about my new Chris Reeve, but this knife has been speaking to me for a while. Shame on me for not listening sooner.

Here are couple pics I took in the office today as I typed this.

I like it. If I were to get an umnumzaan, that would be the configuration. Maybe the Wilson combat version. Dang, now I might have to go look for one of those... The 25 is awesome.

Good write-up & nice pix. Thanks for sharing your "infatuation" experience. You're not alone. :)

MRaymond,
I agree, the 25 is awesome. IMO the 25 is actually slightly more comfortable in (my) hand when opened. Might be that I'm just more accustomed to carrying it but confident I'll feel the same way in a few weeks as well. In no way is the Umnumzann uncomfortable but the sharper angles of the scales lends itself to more connected or engaged user experience. Sound corny, but the Umnumzaan feels exactly the way it looks....and I really like the way it looks.

I prefer the 25 in hand better! The Umnumzaan seems a little straight.. Congrats on the score bro! I do love the blade shape on the Zaan!

Glad to hear Im not the only one obsessed when it comes to finding just the right knife, I will serch the web for hours just to find what Im looking for but at the end it's all worth it, glad for you sir.

I have 2 older model Zaans, better than the current Zaans IMO. I like my 25 a lot too.

The Zaans I have are very smmoth. One of mine is so smooth that I have to be careful not to flick it. It's that smooth.
