Umnumzaan ... Lesson learned

OK, I'm posting this in the spirit of passing along my personal experience with my Umnumzaan ... just one more little reminder that "shit happens" sometimes.

First off for the record, there is nothing wrong in design/broken/defective or modified on this knife ... it is a factory virgin.

I'm well past the "half century" mark and this is not my first knife ... have had numerous EDCs since I was a young boy. Can't remember the last time I was cut by a knife ... especially my own  Anyway on with the story, a moment ago I reached down to extract my Umnumaan (love that knife) as I was pulling it from my pants pocket one of the thumb studs hooked on the seam around the top of the pant pocket and kinda hung-up as it was sliding out; that's when it happened, the tip of the blade was exposed. Then without thinking (or looking at the knife), I made the bad mistake of repositioning my hand to get another grip on the knife and continue extracting it ... THE LESSON TO LEARNED ... DON'T DO THAT ;) ... cause you might (or your are gonna) get cut like I did ... nothing bad ... could have been much worse.... however, on the next "hang fire" I will be looking at the knife to confirm the blade is still closed before sliding my hand down to get another grip.
Hope this helps.

Ouch! Glad it was not bad. Nothing teaches awareness quite like ones own blood.

Jan, Thanks...you are 100% correct I sure won't be letting that happen again...I'm sure other will experience the same ... hope they are as lucky as I was was ... thanks again for your acknowledging my post.
Regards,
Arch

May I ask whether the factory O-rings were installed when this happened?

I experienced issues with the polyeurathane (sp?) O-rings that came with my Umnumzaan not fitting tightly such that one could push them down into the groove and expose the lip of the mushrooming part of the stud. It distracted from the otherwise impeccable look of the knife, which didn't bother me too much but one day I had it catch on my pocket and open just like you. Thankfully I didn't cut myself but I ended up buying some rubber O-rings online that fit much better and keep the stud from catching. I still like the purchase of the stud without the O-ring so I left it only on the clip side... So far it has worked great!

Not just the Umnumzaan. It's happened to me with a Strider and ZT 0560. Them fatty thumb studs.

I opened my self up the other day there as well, not with a CRK though. :foot: I have had the Umnumzaan thumb studs catch my pocket too but I haven't had a cut from it. I tend to twist the knife as I pull it out my pocket so the the back of the handle runs over the top seam of my pocket and the thumb studs are out the way.

Yikes, that's why I prefer to carry my folders in sheaths attached to my belt instead of clipping them to my jeans/pants.

I never even thought of this as a possibility until I read this thread. Thanks av8or2. I won't live long enough to make all my own mistakes, so I might as well learn from those of everyone else! :)

I really prefer "tip down carry" for this very reason but tip up facilitate faster opereation "when every second counts"

My hossom did that too. It's because it opens so easy.

Spyderco Para-Military model will open up in your pocket too ... a Buddy on mine "ventilated" his back pocket that way. His knife/blade was way too loose as it would practically fall open. He tightened it up right after that happened tho ;)
