Hey guys,

Do you put loctite in the pivot of your Umnumzaan?

Also, what sort of lubricant do you guys prefer?

I haven't, but since disassembly/reassembly, that means I have to tighten it about once a day.
Not sure if I'll do the loctite route or not.

I called CRK and talked to the guy who assembles the Umnums and he didn't say exactly where he puts the Loctite but he told me what kind I just can't remember. Though he said using the Loctite is highly recommended. Give them a call they'll tell you every detail on how to properly reassemble the Umnum, proper tension too.

I don't feel the need to disassemble mine like I would a seb. The sealed washers keep everything smooth, even if there's some dirt or whatever, plus I don't have the tool or Loctite and wouldn't want to reassemble without it.

Yet another reason why I prefer my good ol sebenza:P I was so close to getting an Um but now Im glad I went the sebenza route.

To answer your question, if its getting loose id use some locktite (the kind that hold its tight but can be undone with pressure)

Blue, Blue, Blue! Apply with a toothpick, sparingly.

Don't use red!! Never!!

Haven't had to take an Umnum apart yet, but the only lube I'll use on my CRK knives is that CRK Flourinated Grease. It's great stuff. You can probably find it way cheaper somewhere else, but a tube from CRK lasts a long time and comes in the nice hypodermic type applicator.

So I guess it should work perfectly okay by simply dropping a few drops in the pivot without taking the Umnumzaan apart.

Probably yes. I've done it with Sebs. But Ideally you want to clean out the grease first. I just don't know if the Umnumzaan resists even lube getting into the washers.

When we assemble Umnumzaans we do use Loctite. It is 222MS, low strength that creates enough bond to prevent the pivot from coming undone but one that can be broken quite easily when you wish to disassemble the knife. Do not use medium or high strength Loctite – it will cause trouble later!

Only a tiny droplet of Loctite is needed on the threads of the male screw – this is important as it adds to the strength of the pivot assembly. If no Loctite is used, the pivot will loosen continually.

The Umnumzaan take down kit contains two delrin tools, two allen wrenches, a small container of Loctite and instructions on how to dis- and re-assemble. The directions detail where to place the Loctite and the lubricant.

Purchase of the kit is a small investment that will keep your knife in great condition!

CRK,

I can't tell you how helpful and appreciated your recent posts have been.

I know for a while there you did not post very often in this forum, but I am sure I speak for all us in saying that for some items like this, it is great to get answers directly from the source!

i saw adverts for various tools here and there. i did not feel right about getting one that was not from CRK directly for my umnum.

although the directions are there, as stated, they include only a few small pictures.

a video download would be better. :)

BTW, to me its incredible that a manufacturer actually listens and answers customer posts on a third-party-run-forum.

to me that is part of the quality i was happy to pay for in my small sebenza and umnumzan.

i have another sebenza in mind just becasue of the fact that they answer the phone at CRK.

small things like that mean alot.

good stuff. :)
