Okay, an Umnum is coming my way (as other knives make their way out to pay for it :D), and I have some questions. Do I need the take down tool, or will the Sebenza wrenches fit? Is my Benchmade blue box good enough? Will my Husky allen set fit? Can I put my own lanyard on it, or do I need to retain the original lanyard? Can I use Mil Spec on the inside of the handle?

Umnum is a very nice knife, i had the proto type for a while. You will need a tool for the pivot, Its unique to the umnum. Yes you can put your own lanyard on it. And whats mili spec? Did you mean mili tec the lube? If you did , yes you can and no i wouldnt put lube on the washer to handle side, only washer to blade side.

There is virtually no maintence with the umnumzaan. I have had mine since last summer and I use it everyday and it just seems to get smoother each and every day. I did not have the tool in the beginning. I took it apart and did a very thorough cleaning since I got it in a trade. I broke a tooth pick in half and used that for the pivot bushing. I did end up getting the umnumzaan tool from CRK as its much easier to us. The sebenza wrenches work for the two allen screws ( one rear and one clip ). You can tiea lanyard on like a sebenza or use the new lanyard barrel thing. Min has the one that falls out if the lanyard is not attached. I put a lanyard on it when I got it and it has been on there ever since. With the new perferated washer, I can see alot less taking apart and cleaning of the zaan compared to the sebenza. I really like the zaan as it has everything the sebenza has plus many updates Chris Reeve though were better. I am sure you will love it as much as I have. I have my pivot bushing set where it will rotate snuggly. If the knife is too tight or too loose, I rotate the pivot bushing and it basically re-adjusts the tension. Mines opens so fast, like an automatic, its that smooth. If I rotate the pivot bushing, it slows it down a smidgen. Mine has no blade play even when the blade opens like an auto. Money is tight now, so I got mine by trading a lik new strider sng. I could not be happier with the zaan, let us knwo how you like it when it arrives. ???

The ummie is a great knife.
Just do not try to pierce motherboards with it :) knives are not made for that stuff (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8275293)

As for maintenance: take care of the thumb studs / blade stop as it is possible for some rust to develop there. Just dry it well when washed and maybe try to coat it every now and then.

So far, I've only had to lubricate it once with crk fluorinated grease. I think it could use another drop of it, but more because I want to than that it needs to.

Very low maintenance imo, easily washable as the washers are drilled and retain the grease so it won't easily wash away.

I had the take down tool included in the umnum box when it arrived. It's easy to use, but I don't like extra tools in general. that said, you always need a tool to open and clean a knife. so why not a crk tool, it's just an extra one.
