Just got off the phone with Heather at CRK, and they no longer stock the Umnumzaan old style pivot take down tool.

Anyone have an extra, or know where I can get one? Guess I can make one if I have to, but I thought I would check with the experts here first.

Thanks.

oh wow thats disappointing... I suppose thats why they discontinued that style pivot, (the need for special tools)

You can make one quite easily from some nails (with heads cut off) and a piece of wood. Did that to make a tool to open the back of a couple of old Seiko watches I have. Believe I saw a thread here where someone did just this.

Thanks Dennis for that info. That's probably what I will end up doing. I remember seeing a thread that had pix of a takedown kit someone had made out of hardwood dowels and cut off nails.

Edit to add: Here's the thread mentioned above. Looks like a great idea!

Thank you for posting that link. I'm refining my take down tool and whenever I have it where I want it, I may post it again. I was disappointed also that I couldn't just simply purchase the tool. I emailed CRK with no response so...my tool.

Thanks for replying to my thread. I don't have my Zaan yet...it is in the mail heading this way. I sent you a PM asking about some specs on your design.

edit to add: Stand Straight, I received your helpful PM, and I tried to respond to thank you, but your PM mailbox is full, so I emailed my response to you. Thanks again for your excellent directions!

For under 20 bucks you can get a set of snap-ring pliers at Home Depot etc. That's what I use on my old pivot Zaan. Snap ring pier sets usually come with a few pliers so you will have one for each side. The pin size for the larger snap rings is pretty much the same as the holes in the pivot assemblies.

Cody, thanks for your reply. I have snap ring pliers, and it's nice to know they will work ok. Do both sides of the pivot typically have to be secured by a tool in order to disassemble?

You hold one plier stationary (I use the 90 degree pliers) and then turn the other side (I use the straight pliers for this). Go slow and be careful or you will scratch your nice pivot with the hard steel of the pliers if they slip out of the holes. I suppose the advantage of the old CRK delrin tool is that it was plastic, so no worries about scratching. I just take my time, and its all good with the snap ring pliers. Some masking tape would also guard if the pliers slip out.

If you find you need to hold the other side while using the snap ring pliers, you can clamp a couple of finishing nails in a pair of vice grips to hold the other side. Use either very small nails head down or a bit larger and cut/grind the point. If you clamp them with just a little showing, either will be strong enough.

The thing about the Delrin tool is that if you slip, you can't mar the knife's finish at all.

Thanks to all for the information and good ideas you're sharing. This is my 1st Umnumzaan inbound, and, as usual, I'll feel obligated to take it apart to get to know it better. The apparent simplicity of the Zaan is one of the main features that appeals to me at this point.

I emailed CRK a couple of weeks ago looking for takedown tool, and they apologized and told me I would have to send the knife to them if it needed servicing. They should have included the $0.20 takedown drivers with the Umnumzaan to begin with, and then keep a supply on hand for folks who want to buy them. Its not the end of the world, but it is a chink in the CRK customer service armor. I like the look of the old style pivot, but wish my Umnumzaan had the new one for this reason.

I know how to pay them back. I'll buy a 25. That will show them they shouldn't mess with me.

Lol You teach em!

And this is the reason why I am getting email about these tools in the last month or two..Who woulda thunk it?

FYI- Just about time for a giveaway anyway...look for one very soon.

The post is long overdue...I have not been on BF but briefly now and then. How things have changed!

The pivot tool has changed many times since the version you posted.. As far as availability- I cannot answer this question in the CRK forum. PM is best for all involved. I hope you understand. Just not the place to do so.

I am here to see what is new in the CRK world...Definitely have not lost the love for CRK.
