Umnumzaan Opening

Just wondering...

I've heard many say that their Umnumzaan locks open with almost no sound, my first Umnumzaan was also pretty quite.
My new one (born 8-25-09) though has a nice "Clack" sound to it when I open it (sounds just like one of my Sebenza's).

Anyone else notice this or have one too with a nice "Clack" upon opening?

BTW...perfect lockup w/no blade play.

I just bought mine and it has a no clack at all when opened, but a click when closed.

I think the clack you are getting is from the lock locking up

I believe the place where it absorbs sound comes from the orings when the blade hits the handle when it opens.

MIne was REAL quiet at first.
BUT, the lock-bar wasn't sprung far enough; the spring pressure came practically entirely from the clip!
This led to a situation where if you opened it slowly, it would engage to about 25% of the lockbar, at which point the lock would fail with very moderate pressure applied to the spine of he blade.
Since then I have disassembled it and sprung the lock over further myself.
It now engages perfectly(about 75-80%); clackiness now depends on how fast you open it. Open it slowly and it's ALMOST silent. Open it quickly and there is a muted "clack".

I would have sent that one back to CRK for sure... for a $400 knife, that is inexcusable...CRK should know about this to address the employee(s) responsible.

I had to send my first Umnumzaan back due to the fact that whomever peened the ceramic ball in place had originally peened it too close to the edge and had taken it upon himself to peen it again to make sure enough material was moved over to hold the ball in place...probably never would have caused any problems...but that extra peen was not supposed to be there.
BTW...I have seen another pic on the web where I saw the same situation(extra peen almost on top of the original).

I had mine sent without the clip attached as I use the clip insert and didn't want the marks left behind when a clip has been attached (even when new)...my lock bar had plenty of pressure straight from CRK, and my new one has no extra peen stamps.

Can you show me a few pics of what a peened ball is suppose to look like? Did you have any problems with lock up or with blade play? I hope mine didn't have this happen to it also....

mine is about two months new (from TNK to my hands).

it clicks at different volumes. LOL. if i want to, and i move the blade slowly its basically silent. a bit faster and it starts to click but its much less than my small 21.

relatively speaking, its fairly quiet but its just a bit louder than when it first arrived.

also, i agree, no blade play at all. i was sceptical but i am pleasantly surprised at this given that it has a different pivot than a sebneza.

any way way you look at it, i like it quite a bit.

I agree with ipm. Mine kind of sounds/feels? silent like it has hydraulics, to a quiet chock when flipped. I don't hear any clicks like a Sebenza.

Well here is a pic of what it's NOT suppose to look like...I think you can assume by the pic what it should look like.
As far as lock up with this one...no problem.

My regular and tanto Umnums are pretty quiet when opened slowly. Lockup is always perfect and secure.
The faster the opening, the louder the THUD!

Basically, the Umnumzaan has the sound of Quality! :D

Kdarmy, send it back to CRK to request for a new knife. I am sure they will do it and find who is at fault.

Look back just a few replies ago...already been done...replacement knife is perfect.
Pics were just for pinkfloyd101's reference.

Thanks for the pics. Mine looks like it was done right. I guess i'll just have to bite the bullet and send it in, I can't figure out why i have minor play in mine:confused:

Wow I've never seen such a gross error in CRK quality! Glad you got it sorted!

Mine is almost totally silent with a solid lockup. I love the new CRK hotness! Now if it were as easy to open as a Seb...

That's funny, My first CRK folder was an Umnumzaan, which I can open or flick open easily. I liked it so much that I got a Sebenza and find its harder to open or flick. Guess its what you get used to first, anything after that feels foreign, or takes a while to acclimate to.
