I have a small Sebenza 21(its my pride and joy)
and until i got it i read and heard that it is an addiction, once you get one you want moar and i thought all of you were just crazy. but now i get it and want another! I am looking at getting a Large sebenza or a Umnumzaan( new pivot style) so ... to the point of this thread what one would YOU recommend.

Love the old pivot style of the umnumzaan the new style i dont know that much about....so Large Sebenza.....or wait for the 25 to come out.

They both cut stuff, so what you may like is purely subjective. The Sebenza has its simplicity and smooth lines going for it, whereas the Umnumzaan has a more aggressive countenance, the ceramic ball and shock absorbing thumb studs. I honestly don't know which I would prefer - probably the Umnumzaan because if you are going to drop that kind of coinage you might as well get all of the bells and whistles that you won't find on any other knife. Plus, you already have the small Sebenza in the arsenal. After everyone in this thread speaks, you'll just have to pick one and go for it.

I only have an older style Umnum but I dont think the new pivot is going to make it any less of a knife so I would say get the Umnum I love mine

I would have gotten the umnumzaan if it had the newer style pivot at the time, but i got the CF 21. I love the sebenza though! I like the idea of no loctite on the knife, where as with the umnumzaan old style pivot it was recommended to use loctite.

I thought the new style pivot was the same as the 21, which doesn't need loctite? I could be wrong, i haven't looked much into it, but that is what i thought i read (about the same as the 21 pivot).

thanks everyone for you're input!

can you take apart an Umnumzaan like you can the Sebenza?

I seem to recall it being the same as the 25 pivot, thus the reason it uses different size tools and doesn't come with the tool for removing the pivot.

No, the only difference is the diameter of the flange (*not* the pivot itself). It will still need adjustment and thread locker like the original, afaik.

Yes...old style Umnu needs a secial tool, new style Umnu pivot uses a hex wrench. It is not like the Sebenza design that uses a bushing machined to very close tolerances, so you can't just tighten the pivot till it's fully screwed down, but that's true of all Umnus, as well as just about every other knife you can buy.

To answer your original question, the days of the large Sebenza 21 appear to be numbered. I'd buy one on the grounds that it's a classic that every real knife fan should have.

Interesting, then why was the Anniversary Prototype Sebenza 25 a large one?

I think he means Sebenza 21  no there not gonna stop making the large size  I know you can't get a small 25 or at least not yet

I was warned that you couldn't have just one...I also got to fondle a small micarta sebenza today, and that is a sweet knife as well. Good luck with your decision, neither will be regretted.

Yeah, well, that only goes to show that the real answer is "both." We say that a lot with a wink, but IMNSHO it's the truth.

I recently purchased an Umnumzaan (Startac) and I am very impressed with the quality of the knife. Mine came with the old style pivot and LBS. My thumb is sore from trying to break it in, but I'm confident it will get there eventually...I just need to be patient. I already disassembled the knife today, cleaned it, and put it back together. I would highly recommend buying adding one to your collection.
