Umnumzaan (or Sebenza) hard use like...

So you already have an Umnumzaan? Why not use it then? I'd rather break a good knife using it then have it forever sit in a drawer.

I do, and I carry it and use it =) But, for working on-site and 'harder' use, am considering getting a GB... Just wondering how people thought the Umnum would hold up to the kind of use that the GB did.

I can understand wanting to use a less pricey knife for hard use if damage is somewhat likely, but there's nothing in that thread leaving me wondering if an Umnumzaan/Sebenza could handle the work.

Buy the Gayle Bradley and give us a review comparing the two.
Great - thanks for giving me an actual legitimate reason to get the GB, when I was trying to be convinced NOT to get it =) Maybe I will though - the only thing is I'm wondering if I should just get the current version, or try to get the first-run that supposedly had the harder heat treat.

That's reassuring to hear. Do you have any hard-use stories/pics possibly?

Definitely try to get one of the early ones. That blade sings at 64-65Rc. Box codes may help but the best guarantee is to get one without the Gayle Bradley logo on the blade.

Picking up a GB would cost as much, if not more, as getting a new blade for a Sebenza/Umnumzaan. Why don't you use your CRK as hard as you like, then (should you do irreparable damage to your knife) get a new blade?

In my mind there's no reason not to use a CRK hard. Buying another knife hardly seems like the solution! I know from experience that CRK's are plenty tough.

I've used my large Classic for pretty much everything I would use a knife for. That includes camping, fishing, and yard work with no problems. Lock up is still perfect. Only sign of use is some pretty looking scuffs on the Ti scales.

You absolutely won't regret a gb, I have a newer one and have kicked the snot out of it for a year and a half doing construction everyday, it's just a great blade

Just a personal though here, but IMO a knife at Rc 64-65 is not hard use and I wouldn't think of useing it as such, even with a "magical" M4 blade :p. I have never liked the GB and that is not a slight in any way, there is stuff to like about but I just don't.
CRKs whole point to being alive is a knife that can be used and can be used for a very long time. There are not that many knives in the world that have been carried and used for 10+ years and still probably have that in them.

Have I ever chipped a Sebenza or Umnumzaan, yes indeed I have. The bottom line here though is that a CRK is a hell of a lot easier to sharpen back than the ZDP-189, YXR7, "tamahagane", CPM-M4, knives I have used at Rc65~ and CPM REX-121 at Rc 69-70 (). The CRK obviously didn't chip as easily as those knives either having a lower Rc for that very reason, that alone makes it much more useable, IMO.

Not my videos, but I do enjoy these

I have a GB and want an Umnumzaan, I will use my Umnumzaan for everything I have used my GB for.

Well, the newer gb isn't supposed to have the heat treat as high as the first run, though I have never heard of anyone on the forums chipping them. Check out some of the threads on them, people have cut drains out of fiberglass tubs with it. It's the hardest use knife I have handled. Ymmv but I doubt it

No pics, but I've used my CRK folders for everything that needed to be done over the years. Everything would include mundane day to day use including cutting piles of drywall and stripping wire during renovations to on-duty work. At work, I've cut fire hose, cut lids off frozen Class "A" foam containers, cut industrial grade reflective tape(this stuff would almost be as abrassive as roofing shingles) for our apparatus floors right on the concrete with no permanent damage to the edge. I've carefully pried up floor boards enough to allow larger pry tools to gain purchase along with prying windows as well during overhaul and ventillation. Off duty, I've also used the Umnumzaan's glass-breaker once to take windows out of a car that had rolled over on the highway. That feature alone sets it apart from many knives on the market. These are real-deal working knives and I'd put them up against anything on the market without a second thought based on my experiences with them.

I have carried a GB for the past 18 months daily.. well until I got the Umnumzaan... I love the GB so much, I will continue to buy spares.. I gave one of my spares to a fire fighter last week as a gift.. he was carrying some piece of crap, and thought he deserved better..

The GB is the best 100.00 folder on the planet imho. The CRK folders are the best folders on the planet. I love my zaan and sebbies..Will they hold up..?? I have 100% confidence they can do anything a knife like this should do..It is a tool, and not a pry bar..

I have been around this folder block a time or two... I am done messing around.. Chris Reeve folders are what I so humbly have settled on...

I have one of the first run GB's that omitted the BG logo. I also have a small Sebenza. On balance, I'd take a large Sebenza over the GB as an all around carry knife. Despite that conclusion, the Spyderco GB is a winner in all respects. The blade is the sharpest I've ever felt. Even after cutting up card board boxes (against an S30V Military for comparison) so I could fit the pile in the recycle bin, the edge I put on it with my Sharpmaker is the best I've ever felt. The knife feels heavy in the hand but oddly disappears in your pocket. The CF is attractive and those beefy stainless steel liners look like they can take anything. Add the mythical CPM 4 (everyone likes to hear their knife's steel is the best, even if it's not true) and you have a knife of which you feel oddly proud. It's also kinda endearing looking in a goofy way.

I think the "legend of the GB" stems from over delivering on its price point. I also think people like to like Spyderco. I know I do. They got me into carrying knives and I like to see that they keep pace with the industry such that I have not out grown them - they never became the noobs starter-knife. At least not for me. You expect a CRK to be the best. So being the best is only meeting expectations. You don't expect a Spyderco to beat the best so when they come close, the accomplishment is all the more respected. I LOVE my GB.

But I carry a Sebenza.
