I got my new Umnumzaan today, and it's pretty sweet! Older pivot style, and I'm assuming no LBS. I plan to order the tool from CRK, but until then, does anyone have a trick or homemade tool that they have used successfully? So far I have found some snap ring pliers for one side, but not sure whatto do on the other. Also, does anyone make a steel version of the tool? The one's offered are plastic I see. But for the small price you pay, I guess I can't complain..Any thoughts, ideas, or advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks..
"don't take it apart" is an unacceptable answer :)

I just bent and cut a couple of brads to the right length and shape, worked fine until my tools got here.

Spring clip pliers will work if the points are small enough but I use small brads clamped in a pair of Vice Grips. You might need 2 pairs of Vice Grips or to lock 2 other brads in a vise. The only trick is getting the separation right but it's not that hard.

You need to speak nicely to one of the crazy machinists we have about here. That said, people have even used tooth picks to take the knife to bits. :p

HAZE, funny you should mention the toothpick thing....lol. When I got my first and original Umnumzaan, they did not come with the tools. I got some of the heavy round toothpicks and cut the points down as to where they would fit the holes on the pivot nicely, then I cut them in half. I only used two on each side to break it lose, then used my thumb to hold the one side and and used the two toothpicks to remove the other side. Was not absolutely the best and easiest tool to use, but it worked. When CRK began making the tool, I bought one and that was the end of the toothpicks, but they worked before I had the tool and there was no fear of marking the TI like you could with split ring pliers and other metal tools........ If it works, it works....lol.

I went ahead and ordered the tool with my Umnum but like haze said you can use toothpicks.

Yes...nearly all the other improvised solutions involve risk of marring the finish on the pivot, since the improvised tool in most cases won't be a perfect fit.

Wow. Great minds, Haze. I have that tool on the bottom from you, but I have had an idea for the one of the left bouncing around in my head for a couple of years.

Haze,

Where did you get that one on the top left? I like that one a lot and would like to try to get one.

The bottom one was made by our friend Bhyde and the other two are my work. We shouldn't be talking shop in here though..... :)
