Hello, I received a new Umnumzaan today and I was wondering if those of you that have one could chime in.
It's really hard to open. Especially compared to all of my Sebenzas.
I was wondering if they're all like that new and they'll break in or if it should have been easy and smooth from the start.

Thanks.

The pivot may be a bit too tight..Just my own observation. If you have the tool, see if you can loosen it a bit.

One quick tip.. make sure you are pushing 'up' (parallel to handle) when opening.

I understand this doesn't help a tight pivot, but the Umnum certainly opens differently than Sebs.

I got mine brand new as well and it was almost impossible to open 1 handed, after a good bit of playing with it it broke in. Now it is smooth as butter.

It is still tighter than the Sebbies are but pushing up instead of in an arc makes a night and day difference.

Thanks for the tip.

My Umnumzaan was nice and smooth out the box but I handled a few newer ones last week and they were all rather stiff. I also notice there is now a hole in the blade rather then a dimple for the detent ball. That seemed to be a bit stronger than the older dimpled set up too.

Yep. Mine is certainly newer. Birthdate 1/11/11.

I'll play with it a while and let things smooth out. After my thumb recovers that is. :)
Disengaging the lock is a little rough on the thumb as well.
But that may be from all the pushing in the wrong direction trying to open it earlier. Heh.

Get the tool kit and take it apart per instuctions. Lube it up with CR gease, and put it back together as per instructions. Play with it, open and close it. After about a week take it apart again and clean the pivot and re-lube, Don't tighen to tight, just tight enough to center the blade. It will get better soon. I've had mine for about a month now and it operate as smooth as butter. Good luck.

I thought I heard where the new Zaan's are shipping with the kits now. Did I hear false info?

Yes, IIRC either a vendor or someone from CRK corrected that - they do not ship with the tool/loctite kit.

Yes, Neil with TNK's cleared that up. However, because dealers are required to sell the knives at full MSRP without any discounts, they will occasionally offer incentives such as free shipping or the tool kit at no extra charge. Sort of like a hidden, or bundled discount.

I've found that the easiest way to open the Umnumzaan is to get the joint of your thumb in between the scale and the thumbstud.

Mine was awful to open, bad experience for a first crk. the lugs are to close to the handle when closed, poor design it seems to me.

Actually pushing up instead of out at an arc, pretty much solved the issue. I ordered the tool with it so I have that as well.

Pushing in that direction just didn't dawn on me. One of those "Doh!" moments.

Thanks for the help and advice.

Although I have not operated the Zaan yet I do know many knives work best by pushing the stud forward toward the front of the knife rather than out from the handle.

Yeah, I even have a couple of those. :o Hence why it was a "Doh!" moment.
Just never even thought of it.
