Im getting a new umnumzaan (by new i mean it has idaho made and the beveled lockbar). it was made in april 2011. my question is will this knife have the hole in the blade for stronger detent or a dimple in the blade like all other "older" umnums? Thanks in advance for anybody that may be able to help.

Im pretty sure it will have the hole. Unless they changed it again, it will still be the hole. Mine is older than that (forget by how much atm) and it has the beveled lockbar (which I love btw) and the hole for the detent.

The umnumzaan is a seriously awesome knife... congrats on scoring one!

All the new Umnumzaans that I have seen had a hole in the blade for the detent, that is a grand total of only 7 or 8 knives but they were all the same.

My Umnumzaan was made way back in the first half of 2009, and has neither the beveled lockbar nor the hole through the blade for detent.

I'm sure a 2011 model will have them.

thank you for the fast response sir. yea im very excited about this one! i had a tanto version and it was nice it didnt have the beveled lockbar tho and the tanto blade just never grew on me like i thought it would.

thanks Haze! im glad i scored one before they start putting that hinderer lockbar stabilizer on them i think it looks horrible from the one pic i saw. and for my use i just dont need it.

I don't have a camera handy, but basically on mine there is no cutout on the "off-hand" side of the knife to allow for the thumb to use the thumbstud--it is extremely difficult to open right handed (I have a left handed Umnumzaan) using the thumbstud. The beveled lockbar has a section scooped out leading up to the thumbstud to allow the thumb to get underneath and beside it to make it possible to open with the off-hand.

When using my other hand to open the knife I just use the glass breaker to get the blade past the detent, then open the knife with the thumb stud as normal.

Yup, that's how I do it too. I use the glass breaker tip to get past the detent, then open it the rest of the way.

Yeah, i'm bringing this thread back, but i'd really like to know the reasoning for the bigger/smaller hole in some. To give an example, i have a newly acquired Startac born August 2011 that has the bigger hole, and i also have two regular umnums born the next month(Sept 2011) that have the smaller hole. All three knives' action works exactly the same(detent etc). Real curious to these changes.
