Umnumzaan: righties using leftys because of lockbar

Hi gang,

I recently got a used Umnumzaan, it's a great knife =)

However, I find the clip to be uncomfortable - the final uptick seems a bit long and it digs into my hand. BM and other clips are fine for me, but I tried a Sebbie 8 years ago, the clip was one of the reasons I didn't like it, and when I bought the Umnumzaan, yup - still didn't like the clip.

But I like the Umnumzaan as a knife, and in particular the blade doesn't seem as "canted back" as I experienced the Sebenza to be. Love the Umnum, actually, and look forward to having it continue to be my personal EDC (as opposed to the BM710, which I also EDC, but which has now been relegated to more of the loaner/beater slot).

So, I took the clip off. Am thinking about getting the spacer. And I like it a lot better this way. BUT - the the corner just opposite the end of the lockbar, digs into my forefinger when I hold the knive. The Umnum has the nice curve in the beneath the pivot (just above where the thumbstuds rest when blade is closed - forgot what that's called). And on the presentation side it's nice and smooth, but on the lockbar side it's broken up of course by the lock bar.

I tried holding the Umnum in my left hand, and bingo - no more hard corner digging into my first finger (of course).

SO, to make a LONG story short, I was thinking, if I got a Left Umnum, then it would be a lot more comfortable to use. I have no problem single-hand closing my Righty Umnum with my left hand, so I'm sure I will have even less of no problem single-hand closing a Left Umnum in my Right hand.

Was wondering if anyone else experienced this, or even bought a Lefty Umnum as a righty, for this reason?

Why don't you try sanding down the corner? I'll admit that occasionally that corner will poke me and make my grip uncomfortable. I'm not really sure how I grip it differently the rest of the time.

Just from experience looking for one for myself, a left handed Umnumzaan is going to be hard to find.

Ah, didn't realize lefty Umnums were rare. I just remember reading somewhere that lefty versions of the Sebbie were a bit cheaper on the used market, thought same would apply to Umnums.

I thought about breaking that corner with my DMT diafolds; but would that constitute "modding" and nullify my warranty?

I have never had any sort of problem with my CRK folders. In fact I can't even feel the clip in my hand when I hold the knife never mind having discomfort caused by it. You could also try and get a different style clip made for it, that could help a lot. I have too noticed the corner on the locking side but again it has never actually caused any discomfort during use.

If you do mod. the knife in any way you will indeed lose the warranty, but your hands are not covered by CRK so start working on them I think ! :p:thumbup:
